We can presume that most of us enjoy earning a living, getting a paycheck (nowadays direct deposit is the norm) and having some discretionary, or "leftover" money to use after paying our bills. Those funds are what we use for the fun stuff, like eating a meal at a restaurant or seeing a movie or treating a friend to lunch.
But what happens when those funds are no longer available? What if you aren't able to work due to sickness or injury?
For many people (like me) who are small business owners, independent contractors or otherwise self-employed, a serious disability could not only be devastating to a family's finances, but could also damage the business providing the income. But there's a solution!
A Disability Income (DI) insurance policy can help you protect your paycheck, which in turn helps you pay your bills and maybe even have a little leftover for a movie. DI can help you and your business stay afloat when you are unable to work.
There are a few things to consider when looking at DI.
Underwriting looks at your health, your income and the type of work you do. An office worker may have lower rates than a welder because welding is more dangerous. Some insurance companies will require to see your taxes for the last 2 years.
Policies can also be purchased that are solely for keeping the business open.
Individual DI policies may not have all the benefits found in group plans, like maternity coverage. However, there are many more options that can be structured to work for your needs.
Premiums may not be as high as you think, and your coverage can be customized to fit your budget. Given that over 85% of claims are actually for illnesses, like cancer or strokes, that doesn't mean accidents can't happen. Either way, if you can't work, a DI plan will be a great way to avoid guilting your friends and family into contributing to your GoFundMe plan.

As you may know, I often refer to the "Holy Trinity Of Insurance", which consists of major medical insurance, life insurance and, of course, disability insurance. Many people have a disability insurance (DI) policy through their work, but unfortunately, not enough people who are contract employees, business owners and otherwise "self-employed" people (like myself) have an individual DI plan. That's a discussion for another day.
I often speak to groups of employees when I am enrolling benefits, and when I discuss the DI plan, many of the employees ask what the elimination period is when they see it.
Simply put, the elimination period is the time, usually in days, before the policy actually begins to pay out benefits. There are typically two numbers with a comma between them, such as "0,7" or "7,14". The first number is the number of days that need to elapse before the policy will pay for an accident, while the second number is the waiting period for the benefits to trigger during an illness.
In other words, the elimination period is like a deductible, but measured in time instead of dollars. So a 0,7 elimination period means that the policy will begin to pay benefits on the first day after an accident and the eighth day after a sickness.
Just like your deductible on your car or health insurance, the higher the number, the lower your premium. If you think you can "self-insure" for a month or two, your premiums can be reduced significantly.
When one thinks of a disability, injuries from auto accidents come to mind. But consider that almost 90% of DI claims are for illnesses, like cancer. Treatment can last for months and can easily keep someone from working.

When I originally got into the insurance business the internet didn't exist. Agents would carry rate books with incredibly small print and have to calculate the premiums and fees by hand. Needless to say mistakes were a common occurrence, and I was one of the biggest culprits of quoting someone an incorrect price.
At that time (back in the 1980's) we were taught a method of prospecting which involved networking and learning verbiage to ask for referrals. The networking part was not as bad as it would seem because I am comfortable talking to strangers. And I found out later that most of the people I was trying to connect with were not as comfortable as I was in that situation. On the other hand, though, the referral part was hard for me.
Let's face it, most people don't like to give referrals. When I have asked for referrals in the past I can sense the tension build and the wheels turn in my client's head. I understand the trepidation because I have been on that side of the situation as well. You give a friend's name and the next thing you know your friend calls you angrily. "Why did you give that insurance agent my name?"
Unfortunately, things haven't changed much since then. There are still companies out there trying to teach their new agents the old school ways. This is because they believe that insurance selling is built upon a relationship of trust. There's nothing wrong with that, but people in general, and younger people specifically, don't feel the need to have that relationship anymore.
From an insurance agency standpoint, we still do some of the same "old school" things, but with the internet available, we can now market to a wider geographical area without having to be physically able to see and talk to our clients. Zoom and other tools have given agents access to people who need our products and services from multiple states.
This is evident by the increasing numbers of people who are buying financial products on the internet. Things like auto insurance, life insurance, investments and banking were handled in person by an agent or advisor, and they still are. However many people feel they no longer need, or want, to deal with someone for these types of services.
Personally speaking, I began purchasing my car insurance online years ago, as well as my small investment portfolio. By doing this, it keeps more money in my pocket and I don't have to wait for someone to return a phone call or be in their office. Convenience is the name of the game.

As I have mentioned previously, the Greek word for insurance is "asfalia", which literally translates to "security". The Greeks are not paying for someone to insure them, but instead are buying peace of mind, knowing that their families and loved ones are secure.
One of the recurring themes that insurance companies use when advertising, or even training their agents, is that their products give people the peace of mind. A few weeks back I joined an online chat with some people I really didn't know but who had some valuable information to offer. Fortunately, these very nice people welcomed me to their group. One of them in particular, Adam Griggs who is the CEO of CLARAfi, dropped me a note a few days later, which began a conversation.
Adam took a look at some of my videos on YouTube, gave me a word of encouragement, and then suggested that I make a short video explaining my "how and why" I got into the insurance business. To be honest, I initially was thinking, "Yeah, no one really wants to hear that story." But since Adam took the time to watch a few videos, I thought the least I could do would be to consider his idea.
I thought back to my first venture into insurance back in 1985. Having graduated from college with no real job prospects, my father wanted me to work with him at his fledgling engineering firm. Keeping my eyes open for other opportunities, I begrudgingly went to work for him entering data into an MS-DOS program.
There were several issues with this situation, with a major problem being that I was not an engineer. My degree was in Business Management. Also, my old man, who was a micromanager to say the least, wanted me to live at home, work with him, and let him decide what I should eat for dinner. Also, that dinner would include discussions about work, which I had just suffered through a few hours earlier. I was quickly going crazy.
I needed to find a job where I could learn some real world business skills while getting out from under the old man's thumb. One morning I told my father I had a job interview in Raleigh, NC, about an hour away. I didn't really, but my plan was to go there and start looking for work. In the course of a few hours I had managed to find what I thought was a good opportunity with an insurance company.
The job wasn't exactly as presented by the recruiter, who had made it sound fairly easy work with banker's hours and great pay. Instead I found myself driving all hours of the day and night in rural areas doing what boiled down to door-to-door insurance sales. And the product was not something I would not purchase for myself. As a matter of fact, I met several people who were angry about their claims experiences. One even threatened to get his gun and shoot me.
After a few months of this, I realized that my coworkers were leaving and being replaced by a revolving door of new agents. It didn't take me long to jump ship as well, and being young and naïve, I got out of the insurance business altogether for about 15 years.
In 2000, I decided to give insurance another go, but this time would be different. I wanted to learn the business from multiple perspectives, so I worked for various companies as an independent agent. Each company had its own way of doing things, from how they prospected for clients to the ways they collected premiums. I learned how some insurance carriers' products were better than others and when those products were suitable for clients.
About this same time, I had an aunt who had been in a nursing home for over 20 years. She had fallen and broken her hip when I was still in high school. My parents had been left with the responsibility of taking care of her bills and I watched them struggle. Even though my father's engineering firm was doing okay, his finances were stretched. A long term care policy would have been a great help, had one been available for her (and subsequently my parents) when she had gone into a facility.
That's when I realized that selling insurance was more than just a job, but a way to help people who were in bad situations by convincing them to mitigate their financial risks ahead of time. There were plenty of examples of insurance policies keeping people from financial ruin, from strangers to those close to me.
For example, my wife's father had died unexpectedly before I had met her, and his life insurance policy helped her graduate from college and take care of other necessities. We even used some of the proceeds years later to make a down payment on our home.
Making sure that people have the right amount of insurance, their beneficiaries are up-to-date and keeping it all in a budget can be tough. Insurance is a product that most people don't want to buy, so the job is more about convincing them they need it. Because of this, the stereotypical insurance salesperson is high pressure. I prefer to say I use "good pressure", because my intention isn't to get the sale, but to make sure that when something bad happens, my clients won't have to move out of their homes or take a second job to pay the bills.
When someone goes to my website and books a phone appointment to discuss life, disability or long term care insurance with me, I may give them a bit of a nudge to make sure their needs are met. It's all done with their best interests in mind. And that is why I do what I do.

Memorial Day is upon us, which is the day we recognize all of the men and women who served in our military and made the ultimate sacrifice. It is an important day and too many of us don't take the time to appreciate these people. If you have an opportunity to attend a ceremony, you will be happy you did.
As it's also the end of May, we can close the books on another Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM), which is when the insurance industry promotes the importance of disability insurance. Unfortunately, disability coverage is not top of mine for most people. Part of this is due to misconceptions of why to buy it and what it does.
For example, most group disability plans cover a few weeks "maternity" coverage, immediately after a child is born. I have worked in some of these groups, like schools and municipalities, when the employee decides to drop her coverage because "I already had my kids." I try to plea with people to keep their policy, not because I'm will lose a commission (I'm on a salary), but because there are so many other times when that policy will be useful.
One of my old sales managers would tell us that when people hear the word "disability", they think of someone in a wheelchair who has been seriously injured in a car accident. The truth of the matter, however, is that over 85% of disability claims are for illnesses, with cancer being the leader in that category. (Heart disease and other cardiovascular illnesses are not far behind.)
Of course there are those people who do get injured. I spoke with a teacher in western North Carolina who had been in a car accident. Someone "t-boned" her car and broke her femur. She was out of work for four months while she went through physical therapy. Of course, her policy did what it was designed to do, which made her a strong advocate for disability insurance among her coworkers.
But what is your disability policy designed to do? Your policy is actually "paycheck" or "income" protection. If you were to get sick or hurt and were unable to work, your policy would help you pay the bills. And we all know that those bills don't stop coming just because you are a very nice person.
There are those people who don't necessarily need a disability insurance policy. They may have passive income, like rental properties or other investments, that will provide some money to pay monthly bills. For most people, though, this is not the case.
If you have an employer who offers a disability policy, take a good hard look at it. And if you are a business owner, a contract employee or otherwise self-employed, you may want to consider an individual disability policy. They have a few differences from the traditional group plan but can be an integral part of your financial plan.

One of the hard parts of being an insurance agent is getting people to have an honest conversation when it comes to their finances and how their situation affects future decisions. Some clients either don't want to discuss their goals or simply have not taken the time to figure out what their goals are.
There have been many times when I have sat down with someone and asked, "Where do you want to be three years from now?" The look on the client's face is priceless. They really don't know. I'm not trying to embarrass them or make them feel bad, but the point of the conversation is that many people are just meandering through their financial issues, paying bills as they come in and buying stuff when they have money put aside.
Just as you would think, most people don't have a clue what their goals are. They say that they haven't really considered it before. Here's an exercise you can do (it's the same one I use with my clients) and it will help you make a game plan.
Take a sheet of paper and put today's date at the top. Next to that, put the same date but three years from now. Underneath the dates make three columns, with headings "Personal, Professional, Financial". Under each heading just write what you want to happen within the next three years.
There are no wrong answers. I've had people give me all kinds of answers from saving $100,000 (financial) to owning a new boat (personal). One lady who was a cosmetologist put "open a cosmetology school" under the professional heading. Knowing what the goal is helps tremendously but that is just the first part of the conversation.
Then I ask what would happen to that goal if the client were to die unexpectedly or to become chronically ill. Will they still be able to reach those goals if a potential landmine were to get in the way?
Every once in a while one question will get the client to open up and that question is "What keeps you up at night?" As a husband and father, there have been many times when I have lain in bed thinking about retirement, sick family members, paying for my child's education and a long list of other issues that can, and probably will, show up down the road. It can be overwhelming.
Another part of this is that people will hear advice, through friends or the media, which may sound good, but may not be applicable to their situation. One of my pet peeves is "financial gurus" giving generic advice. A single dad who makes under $50,000 a year and has a sick parent will have an entirely different situation than a married couple who have a six-figure income and no debt. Much like fingerprints, no two financial positions will be the same.
When I sit down with someone and they say they want a 20-year term life insurance policy for $100,000, I ask questions like:
How did you decide that was the amount of insurance you needed?
Will that cover any debt you have, including your mortgage?
Will that amount replace your income?
What do you want to accomplish with that amount of coverage?
Sure, this line of questioning can make someone feel uncomfortable, but my job is to make sure that the client gets what they need. Taking the time to get an accurate number for the face value of a life insurance policy will make sure that the client is getting what they actually need.

For many people, buying life insurance is a chore. Having to research the different types of policies, from term to whole life, as well as dealing with an agent and maybe even scheduling a paramed exam, can make the whole experience is less than enjoyable. And don't even start with the litany of "optional riders" that can be tacked on to a policy, increasing the cost and leading to more confusion.
But before you decide you don't want any riders, let's take a look at a few of them over the next few posts. You might decide which ones will work well for you in the long run.
In this post I want to discuss the Disability Waiver of Premium (WP), which is available on nearly all types of life insurance, as well as other insurance plans too. Generally speaking, this rider makes sure that if you (or the payor of the policy) become disabled and are unable to work, the premiums will continue to be paid so that your policy does not lapse. Think of it as insurance on the life of your policy.
One of my favorite clients and I were discussing this rider one afternoon and he said, "I never thought of this before, but the last thing you need if you can't work is for your life insurance to get pulled out from under you. That's when you need it most." He was correct.
This rider is usually so inexpensive that I will urge clients to take it, as the cost is inconsequential. For example, a policy that may cost around $30 each month will see a premium increase of less than a dollar. Seriously, this is never a deal breaker. I have even worked with agents who don't even discuss it with the client and tack it on anyway.
I have a client who purchased a policy from me about 10 years ago. A few years ago she was in a very bad accident that has left her permanently (as far as I know) disabled. Since we had added her WP rider on at the time of the application, she does not have to make any premium payments until doctor says she can go back to work. Every six months or so she receives a form from the insurance company (I get copied on all of this) that she passes on to her physician. The doctor completes the form saying that she is still disabled and she continues to get her life insurance paid for.
Here's where things get really interesting. After discussing this situation with the insurance company, I found out that if the term of the policy ends (in her case it was a 20 year term) and she is still disabled, they will convert the policy to a permanent whole life policy for her at no charge. Needless to say, she was very relieved to hear this when I passed the information along.
I have worked with other carriers that will convert in the middle of the term if someone is permanently disabled. The most interesting case was a fellow agent who took out a policy on his son when the boy was very young. Around age 4 the boy was diagnosed with autism and the father was able to get the WP to kick in and convert at the same time.
The point of all this is that I don't want you to dismiss the rider when it can offer great value in a time of need. Discuss all of this with your agent or drop us a note on our website. In the meantime, please stay healthy!

One of the reasons for starting this blog was to help educate the public in the many facets of insurance. The business can be confusing for most people (including some agents). There are many kinds of insurance from the property and casualty side which included auto, homeowners and business policies, to the life and health side of the business. Even though I have licenses that allow me to sell both kinds, I prefer to concentrate on the life and health part. Here again, there are a lot of different products in that category alone.
Here are just a few life and health insurance products:
Major Medical
Term Life insurance
Whole Life insurance
Universal Life insurance (traditional and indexed)
Long Term Care
Annuities (Fixed, indexed and variable)
Disability Insurance
Critical illness
Cancer plans
Accident plans
Hospital Indemnity
Dental
Vision
And that is not a complete list. Each of the ones listed above can be broken into a few more subtopics. The average consumer is not expected to know all of the nuances of each product. But for those of us in the industry, we need to be aware how each product works and when it is appropriate to suggest it for each client.
However, there are times when a client knows nothing about insurance. For instance, someone may tell me that they absolutely have to have a whole life insurance policy. When I ask why they feel they need a whole life policy they may say something like "My father said he always had it so I need it." Obviously that is not a valid reason as a term life policy may be more appropriate and could save the person a lot of money.
With this in mind, I wanted to make a short list of things everyone should know about insurance, especially life and health products.
1. Life insurance can change as your life changes. A young couple with small children may need term life early on, but as the kids move out of the house and the mortgage gets paid off, their life insurance needs change.
2. Disability insurance is just as important as life insurance. If you die, your life insurance will pay a lump sum of money to your loved ones, who will be sad but will continue to move forward with their lives. However, if should unexpected get seriously ill or have a accident, your family will need to replace your income as well as taking care of you. Disability insurance is really paycheck insurance and it allows your family to continue paying the bills while you recover.
3. Being chronically ill is a very expensive proposition and Long Term Care insurance (LTCI) can help cover those costs. We all know someone who is in a nursing home, assisted living or other type of senior care facility. Depending on the location the annual costs of these facilities can easily be from $30-50k each year. With the pandemic ravaging facilities, most people would prefer to stay in their own homes, but that can be even more expensive. Round the clock care can run twice the price of a facility.
4. Don't pay attention to "financial gurus" who give generic advice on TV or the radio. The truth is that everyone has a different financial situation and each needs to be treated uniquely. For example, I cringe when I hear someone say "Buy term and invest the difference. That may be a good strategy for some people but others may be better off with permanent life insurance.
Another one of these geniuses says buying LTCI is a bad idea before the age of 50. He fails to mention that about a third of those receiving long term care services are under 60. Again, everyone has a different situation.

Insurance agents have reputations as pushy salespeople similar to those who sell used cars. When I originally went into the business I was fully aware of this and was resistant to even get into the industry. To be honest, the first company I worked with was guilty of feeding into this stereotype. The reason for this was that instead of trying to be a consultant and helping the client structure a plan with a group of good policies we had to work with, we only had one product. And for the most part, we would only meet with the customer once.
We were trained to be aggressive and to get out of someone's home or business with a check in hand. As my coworker would say, "Your income is in their wallet and you need to do everything possible to get it out of there." We dubbed this "guerilla selling", since we would rush in, try to make a few bucks and get out.
Unfortunately this left me with the impression that all insurance sales were like this. I was young and naïve. My 23 year old brain knew that I did not want to do this kind of sales for the rest of my career. So I got out of insurance and went into selling office supplies, then retail management.
After a few years I decided to rejoin the insurance workforce, but this time things would be different. No high pressure selling for me. For the most part, things were much better than the first time around and I noticed that many of my coworkers were of the same mind as me.
Sure, there were those agents here and there that insisted on being pushier than the rest of us. Those agents rarely stuck around for long because much of their sales did not stay on the books. One of the nice things about selling insurance is the residual commissions, but if someone cancels their policy too soon, those commissions go away.
We had veteran agents who offered to mentor the newer reps. If we had a case we were working on, we could run it by them and get feedback. The most often asked question from them would be "Is this in the best interest of the client?" In other words, "Are you helping the client or yourself?"
This gave me a much better perspective of what an insurance agent was supposed to be doing. That stereotype of a pushy insurance agent was fading from my mind.
But why does that stereotype still persist? One answer may be the product itself. Let's face it, no one really wants to buy insurance. It is a product that we buy hoping to never use. Also, it's not tangible. You can hold your policy, but in essence, it's just a promise on a piece of paper. Unlike a car or a home or a video game, you can't enjoy it (unless you enjoy the peace of mind that comes with having it).
I like to use the "saving up for" test when it comes to sales. Ask someone what the next big (or small) purchase is that they are saving up for. You will get answers like a down payment on a home or a new flat screen TV. No one saving up for Long Term Care insurance or a disability plan.
And the fact that some insurance has to be mandated should tell you something. If a state government says you are required to have auto insurance, you can infer that if they didn't there would be a lot more uninsured motorists driving around. The same goes for mortgage companies requiring homeowners insurance.
Speaking for myself, I don't want to "high pressure" someone with something they obviously don't want but most like need. With that in mind I use what I call "good pressure" selling, which means that, like a family member who is looking out for their best interest, I'm going to do my best to help someone make the best decision, not just for my client, but for their family as well.
If you think your agent is too pushy you don't have to do business with him or her. But be aware that most are looking out for you and your family. By asking questions and building a rapport we hope to earn your trust and dispel the idea of the pushy salesperson.

Life insurance is like your car, your home and a lot of other things you own in that one has to do "maintenance" on it from time to time. By that, I mean that one shouldn't buy a policy, throw it in a drawer or safe deposit box and forget about it. An owner of a life insurance policy should take a good look at it at least every other year to make sure it is doing what is needed.
One of the many mantras that life insurance agents love to repeat is the word "review', as is "We need to review your policy." In sales classes, agents are taught to contact their clients twice a year - on the birthday of the client and on the anniversary date of their policy. The former is mostly to check in and hope the client will have some referrals. The latter is to set an appointment with the client to go over their policy, thus the "review".
As an agent who has been in the business for a while, I can attest that a vast majority of clients say something like "I'm good for now" when I mention taking a look at their coverage. Maybe I should press harder for that appointment, but it's obvious the client isn't interested.
Unfortunately, this goes on every year and on occasion something will go sideways when the insured dies. Whether the client doesn't have enough coverage or just failed to keep the beneficiaries up to date, I know there are adjustments that can be made.
A good example is when a beneficiary change is in order. In that instance, either the named beneficiary has passed away unexpectedly or should be replaced for other reasons. A few years back I found out that my client's daughter, who was in her 20's and had a history of drug issues, was living on the streets. My client was taking care of her grandchildren with the help of another adult child.
It was an awkward subject to broach with my client as I had heard about her predicament through the grapevine, but she was gracious as I let her know that she was doing the best she could with a bad situation. She acknowledged that her daughter probably was not a good candidate to receive a large death benefit and we changed everything over to the other adult child, who ultimately got legal custody of the kids.
In another instance, I met with a client who had taken out a policy for $250,000 a few years earlier. At the time, the face amount made sense because it covered the balance of his mortgage and could help pay off some items like final expenses and some credit card debt. He had some money put away and his wife also had a good job. However, he had some unexpected expenses that required he borrow some funds, and the lender was insisting he purchase a life insurance policy to cover the debt.
By checking in with him and learning about his new situation, I was able to help him secure the note with a 10-year term life insurance policy which made the lender very happy. (Sidenote: My client paid off the debt earlier than expected and was able to cancel the policy.)

Last week I received one of the highest compliments an insurance agent can get. My client, whom I have worked with off and on for several years, handed me a sheet of paper with about a dozen names on it. "These are friends of mine. Some are family. I told them what a good job you do and how you don't pressure me into anything. They are expecting you to call them."
This was a big surprise because I mention referrals from time to time but don't push for them as much as I probably should. There have been times when I have been chastised by my sales manager for not using the litany of Jedi mind tricks we are taught. Having a nice list of names presented to me is a different matter altogether.
There are times when I will explain to a client how they can take "ownership" in my business by giving referrals. The reasoning is that if a client refers me to a friend or family member, I can spend more time working with that person instead of prospecting. One of the many dirty little secrets of the insurance business is that we spend a lot of time just trying to get clients, especially at the beginning of an agent's career. It can take time away from helping the clients we have so clients feel they are helping themselves when them give us someone to see.
A former coworker of mine used to say that the hardest part of the job was finding someone to talk to. It's true. It's a constant battle to find new clients when you sell something that people really don't want to think about. I've heard people say things like, "I'm saving up for a car" or "I'm saving up for a down payment on a house." Nobody says, "I'm saving my money for an insurance policy."
One of the reasons a lot of agents don't like to ask for referrals is because many clients don't care to give them because they have gotten burned in the process. A typical example goes like this. Bob, the agent, meets his new prospect, Mary and asks her for a referral. She reluctantly gives Bob the name of a coworker, Jim. Bob calls Jim, who isn't interested and berates Mary. "Why did you give that guy my name? I thought we were friends!" Jim says to Mary. Mary is hurt and never gives another referral.
There are several problems here but the obvious one is that Bob hasn't proven himself to be a good agent. Mary just met the guy for goodness sake! How would she know if he is going to be a decent agent or if his insurance products are worthwhile?
This is why, on those occasions when I do get referrals, they come from clients I already work with, who have had time to see that I'm working for them. Those clients are "influencers" in a way because they hold sway with their friends and family members.
So when someone, like my client who gave me that list of names to call, takes the time to do something like that, I know I have earned it. It really is the best compliment someone can give me. That list will potentially make me some money, but what it really does is let me know that my client has taken ownership of my insurance practice. And she is trusting me to work with those people and with the same degree of professionalism I did with her.

Disability buy out insurance is something that small businesses need. Unlike a large business, small businesses can sometimes be crippled by the absence of a key person - someone who is so critical to the company that the business could fail if that person is unable to work. Depending on the job of that key person, their disability can leave work undone or have a financial gap in the business income that a business may not recover from without disability buy out insurance. Disability buy out insurance is designed to provide the funds necessary to purchase an owner or partner's interest in a small business if that person becomes disabled.
Disability buy out insurance should be an integral part to any business continuation or succession plan. Small business owners need to agree to buy any disabled owner's interest in the business at a pre-arranged, agreed upon price, and fund the purchase with disability buy out insurance. The buy out will allow the remaining owners to continue operations by financially replacing the key person whos disability prevents them from returning to the business.
The first step in purchasing disability buy out insurance is to have a thorough and accurate valuation of the business. Once a fair market value has been established for the business upon which the parties agree, the owners must then into a buy-sell agreement setting conditions that will automatically generate a sale of a disabled owner's interest. Finally, a disability buy out insurance policy is purchased on each owner or partner to provide the funds needed to buy out that share in the business in the event of a disability.
When a disability occurs, an elimination or waiting period, must be satisfied before any benefits are paid. The length of this period is decided upon at the time of the disability buy out insurance application. the elimination period begins at the date of the initial disability and can extend for 12, 18 or 24 months, depending on the terms of the buy sell agreement. Choosing the length of the elimination period is determined by the needs of the business. The longer the elimination period, the less expensive the premium will be. However, the longer a business would have to sustain itself before the benefit or buyout occurs.
Under this type of small business insurance, benefits are paid once the elimination period has been satisfied with no need to confirm continued disability. In other words, once the payment of benefits begins, the terms of the buy-sell agreement will be fulfilled and the policy will pay benefits accordingly. A disability buy out insurance policy can be custom designed to meet the specific needs of each company, but lump sum or scheduled payments over a two, three or five year period are the most common benefit payment options.
Small businesses may not have the resources that a large business has. With that in mind, they should have contingency plans including small business disability insurance, business overhead expense policies, disaster recovery plans and other risk transfer components. The total disability of an owner active in the day-to-day operations of any business could present serious financial problems. To determine your small business disability insurance needs, ask yourself the following:
What impact would the disability have on the company's income?
Where will the money come from to an income to the disabled (non-contributing) owner?
Does the business have adequate funds to buy out the disabled owner?
Will the company need to borrow money to do this?
What defines a disability from the business' perspective?
How long must an owner be disabled (the elimination period of the policy) before the policy is executed and the share is sold to the remaining partners?
Will the benefits to fund the buy out be paid as a lump sum or over time?
What if the disabled individual recovers after the buy out is triggered under the terms of the buy-sell agreement and, as a result, the policy stops paying benefits?
A small business disability insurance policy can be useful and a key element of a buy-sell agreement, but a small business must be sure to ask the right questions as it plans for the future. Doing so will enable the remaining owners to purchase or buy out key persons without having to seek outside investors. A disability buy out policy will allow a business to continue in its normal operations without having to financially drain the company to keep control.

One of the running myths in the insurance business is that people want personalized service. The New Year has begun! Happy New Year to all and good riddance to 2020!
A few nights ago there was a primetime special on one of broadcast networks with a recap of 2020. The bulk of it was a chronological look at the Covid pandemic and how people and our leaders were reacting to it all. After watching about 15 minutes of this I had to change the channel to a ballgame thinking to myself, "I don't want to relive that again. And who doesn't know this stuff at point?" It was bad when it was happening and it still is bad in the rear view mirror.
And that is where 2020 needs to be, in the rear view. There is no need in dissecting it and examining it under a microscope. We were all there and saw it firsthand.
Through it all a few good things did happen. Most of us have a newfound respect for our medical community, especially those nurses and doctors who have been doing their best in overcrowded hospitals. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the caregivers in nursing and assisted living facilities too. These folks have poured their blood, sweat and tears into their work, with some getting infected themselves. And a few have died in the process. We should be thankful for them and their efforts.
Others should also be considered in the same vein. Grocery store workers, meat workers and others who help us get food on our tables should know they are more than "essential".
Yes, there have been some silver linings. People have learned how to get together when they can't be together, via virtual technology. We have adapted and overcome. Like they say, "what doesn't kill you will make you stronger." We as a society should come out of all of this stronger.

Disability insurance is often misunderstood. While almost everyone gets the need for life insurance, not everyone understands the importance of having disability insurance. Insurance agents have the opportunity to help their clients understand this important coverage.
Disability insurance protects your earning power should you become disabled and unable to work. It can help protect your lifestyle from a full or partial loss of income. As you well know, the probability of you becoming injured or disabled during your working career is much higher than your probability of dying.
The odds are about three to five times greater that you will become disabled for at least 90 days or longer than the odds are of of you dying. Disability insurance can help bridge this gap in income during a period of disability.
Disability insurance typically comes in two varieties, short-term and long-term.
Short-term disability coverage typically provides income replacement for an injury or disability that lasts anywhere from 30 days to one year. The time frame will vary based on the policy. Short-term disability coverage is a common employee benefit, some employers offer it at no charge.
Long-term disability policies typically cover a disability that lasts three months or longer. This also includes a permanent disability that limits the covered individual’s ability to work on a permanent basis either in part or totally.
For those who are employed, many employers offer both short-term and long-term disability coverage as part of their employee benefits menu. It’s common for these policies to replace 50% to 60% of the employee’s compensation once the coverage kicks in.
This group coverage generally comes at a reasonable cost and will be sufficient for many of your client’s needs. However, some clients may have situations for which this type of coverage might not suffice. And of course, others who are small business owners, contract employees or otherwise self-employed might not have access to group coverage.
Group disability policies typically have a very broad definition of disability that often refers to the ability to do any sort of work. The policy might require you to work at any sort of job you might be able to do, and then pay you for the difference in your salary from your old job and the new one. In an extreme case this might require someone who is used to white collar employment to work in a fast food restaurant to receive policy benefits.
Disability coverage purchased privately will often have a narrower definition of disability. For example, an oncologist will be considered to be disabled if they can’t work in their field or something extremely close to it. Same with an attorney and many other professions.
Group coverage may not cover some forms of variable income such as commissions or incentives that many salespeople or high level executives might count on as a key portion of their overall compensation. The group policy might limit the covered compensation to the policyholder’s regular compensation.
We recommend that if you have a group plan to avoid having your premium payments deducted "pre-tax", as this can make your benefits taxable if you should become disabled and need to file a claim. Saving a few dollars in payroll tax could decrease your benefits considerably.
Along with that, note that your benefits can be taxable if your employer is paying for your coverage.
You will need to shop around for a policy and insurance company offering the coverage that best fits your situation. In general, the narrower the definition of disability, the higher the premium. Privately issued policies will as a rule be more expensive than group coverage.
There are a number of factors that will impact the cost and even the availability of a disability policy for you. These include:
The elimination period. This is the waiting period until coverage kicks in. The shorter the elimination period, the higher the premium. Think of it as a deductible in time.
Definition of disability. As discussed above, a policy with a narrow definition of disability will cost more.
Your occupation may factor into the equation, especially if you work in a field that is more likely than some others to result in a disabling injury.
Your income. The higher the income the higher the premium as the insurance company would have to pay a higher benefit level for a disability claim.
Social Security offers disability benefits, but they are very hard to qualify for. This is not something you should depend on to cover you in the event of a disabling condition.
Should you find yourself disabled and unable to work for a prolonged period of time, this could be financially devastating without the proper coverage in place.
