What The Heck Is An Elimination Period?

As you may know, I often refer to the "Holy Trinity Of Insurance", which consists of major medical insurance, life insurance and, of course, disability insurance. Many people have a disability insurance (DI) policy through their work, but unfortunately, not enough people who are contract employees, business owners and otherwise "self-employed" people (like myself) have an individual DI plan. That's a discussion for another day. 


I often speak to groups of employees when I am enrolling benefits, and when I discuss the DI plan, many of the employees ask what the elimination period is when they see it. 

Simply put, the elimination period is the time, usually in days, before the policy actually begins to pay out benefits. There are typically two numbers with a comma between them, such as "0,7" or "7,14". The first number is the number of days that need to elapse before the policy will pay for an accident, while the second number is the waiting period for the benefits to trigger during an illness.

In other words, the elimination period is like a deductible, but measured in time instead of dollars. So a 0,7 elimination period means that the policy will begin to pay benefits on the first day after an accident and the eighth day after a sickness.

Just like your deductible on your car or health insurance, the higher the number, the lower your premium. If you think you can "self-insure" for a month or two, your premiums can be reduced significantly. 

When one thinks of a disability, injuries from auto accidents come to mind. But consider that almost 90% of DI claims are for illnesses, like cancer. Treatment can last for months and can easily keep someone from working.

Wouldn't You Rather Spend Your Savings On Something Fun?

I recently had a conversation with a very nice couple from Greensboro, NC. They both worked as realtors, had three children and seemed like they were doing a good job executing their financial game plan. 

As the housing market has been doing well, they have managed to sell more in the last year. They both know that things won't stay this way forever, so they put aside a good amount of money each month for their "rainy day fund". Having the discipline to this and stick to it is rare to find these days, so I told them they were doing an awesome job. 

We continued to discuss their other financial issues. They had a decent amount of life insurance on themselves (they probably could have used a bit more) and had started a retirement account  as well. This was especially encouraging because it can be a difficult task when one, or in this case both, of the spouses are self-employed. Nobody is deducting money from their paycheck for them. 


I was starting to think they didn't need me at all. However, it didn't take long to discover there was one potential landmine that needed to be addressed. I asked them a basic question. "Do you have enough money put aside to help pay bills if you are sick or hurt and can't work?" 

They thought about it for a minute and said, "Well, we could dip into our savings." 

"You're right. You can do that. But is that what you are saving for? To cover bills?"

They hadn't considered this so I offered a better alternative. "If you couldn't work, you wouldn't have that income. Sure, one of you could pick up some of the slack, but do you want to go through that? Your savings should be for things you want down the road, like a vacation or to buy a nice car. No one saves to pay bills."

"Let's do this," I suggested. "Let's take a look at disability insurance. The premiums won't break your budget but it could keep you from having to go through your savings." 

They agreed to look at a few options. As we move through the process I'm sure they will both complete applications. And since they are both fairly young and healthy, they should both have policies to protect their paychecks soon.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month Part 2

In the previous post I discussed what Disability Insurance Awareness month was and why Disability Insurance (DI) is important to have. Along with that was some very valuable information about how it is structured and the ways it can work for you. But I do want to pivot a bit and go over how you can figure out how much coverage you need, or if you need any DI at all. 

As mentioned previously, DI is considered to be "paycheck insurance" by many because it replaces your income if you are unable to work due to an accident or sickness. As I tell my clients, just because you are out of work doesn't mean the bills will stop coming. The stress of seeing bills pile up can make an illness even worse.

And speaking of illnesses, did you know the vast majority of disability claims are paid due to illnesses and not accidents? When we talk to people about being disabled they think of car accidents and such, but in reality, cancer, heart attacks and strokes, along with other dread diseases, are the reasons why most claims are filed. Even Covid has been a huge factor in DI claims.

For a few people, a DI policy is not necessary. Having passive income streams like rental properties or other investments can provide enough money to pay their bills. But for the rest of us we need every dollar we can get our hands on if we are not able to work.

How much do you need if you are applying for coverage? Generally speaking, most group plans that you get through work will pay up to 60-70% of your gross pay, which is about what your take home pay is after you deduct taxes. 

On the other hand, if you are self-employed or a business owner, your income may not be the same each year. A different way of calculating is needed. Luckily, we have a web based quoting system for determining the amount you are eligible for based on your income, which gives us a maximum benefit amount. Again, you can apply for "up to" that maximum, but you may not need the full amount. This is when we use the "HUG" system to work out the numbers. HUG stands for: 

  • Housing. How much do you pay each month for rent or mortgage?
  • Utilities. Electricity, water, gas and other maintenance.
  • Groceries. Just because you are out of work doesn't mean you can't eat. At the same time, it doesn't mean you'll be going to Outback every night either.
Using the HUG method, you can determine a minimum amount of coverage you need to get you by while you're out of work. Remember, the more coverage you apply for, the higher the premium will be. 

A few years ago I had a real estate agent ask me a very good question. She wanted to know if she was approved for a policy during a year when she was making good money and got disabled during a year when the housing market was down and her income was lower, would she still get the benefit she applied for? I called one of our carriers and spoke to an underwriter about this dilemma who agreed it could be confusing, but in her words, "We just want to know if this person was working at the time of the disability." In other words, yes, she would get her benefit as long as the real estate agent hadn't quit her job.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month Part 1

May is once again Disability Insurance Awareness Month, when the insurance industry tries to let the public know the importance of having a disability insurance policy. As I say whenever I sit with a client or talk to a group, the Holy Trinity of insurance is your life insurance, your health insurance and your disability insurance (DI). That's how important it is!

Think about it. If you are sick or hurt and are not able to work, your bills just keep coming. No one is going to let you have a free pass on your car payment, mortgage or phone bill because you are a nice person. In essence, having a DI plan in place is paycheck insurance. That's why people call DI "paycheck protection".

How does it work? Depending on your employment and how you get paid there can be variations. The more common scenario is that you buy a group plan through work or your employer pays for it or both. I have seen instances the employer pays for Long Term Disability (LTD) but the employee pays for their own Short Term Disability (STD) policy.


These types of policies usually pay up to 60-70% of your gross income. Keep in mind that if your employer is paying for your policy and you should start receiving benefits, those benefits will be taxable. This is also true if you purchase your plan through a "worksite*" insurance company and they pre-tax your premiums. 

Short term DI usually pays for the first 3, 6 or 12 months of a disability, while long term DI will start paying after those dates. The key is to make sure you have coverage seamlessly throughout the time you are out of work, which is determined by your physician. 

Also, group plans will typically cover maternity for 6 weeks (8 weeks if a caesarean is called for). Too many people will drop their DI plan when they decide that they aren't having any more children. I always encourage people to keep their policy, as it is not "baby coverage" as many seem to feel.

On the other hand, if you are self-employed or a 1099 employee, like a realtor or insurance agent, you may need to look into an individual DI plan. These are structured a bit differently in that rates will be determined based on factors like:

  • Your occupation. A welder or a roofer will pay more than a secretary because their job is more dangerous. 
  • Your health, age and tobacco usage. Just like life insurance, the insurance company wants to know if you are a good risk or not. 
  • Your income. Determining your benefit amount is dependent on how much money you earn, so the insurance carrier may ask for a copy of your tax returns. We have one company that ask for it when you file a claim. 
Another important factor is the "elimination period", which is like a deductible, but in time instead of money. If you have a 14 day elimination period, that means that the policy won't start paying out benefits until the 15th day of your illness or accident. Elimination periods can vary from 7 days to 6 months, and like the deductible on your car insurance, the higher you go, the less the policy will cost you.

Also, keep in mind that individual plans will not cover maternity.

What Is Being Left Out Of The Holy Trinity Of Insurance?

One part of my insurance practice involves worksite supplemental benefits. (Think dental, vision, cancer plans, etc.) On occasion, I give talks to groups of employees on these benefits. And one of the things I cover is the "Holy Trinity of Insurance", which is comprised of their health coverage, their life insurance, and last but not least, their disability insurance (DI).


Over the next day or so I'll speak with these employees individually and sure enough, someone will come in and ask for that "Holy Trinity insurance". Pretty funny I think, but it lets me know that I'm getting through to them. 

The reason these people buy DI is because they see the value of insurance on their paycheck. And that sums up DI in a nutshell - income insurance. You insure your house and car, which is paid for by income, so it makes sense. And no matter if the client is a realtor, plumber, attorney or a doctor, if they can't work, they can't pay the bills. 




There are many self-employed folks who don't have access to these group plans, but still are interested. For them, we offer individual plans which differ slightly. For instance, not only is the client's health underwritten, but sometimes, the personal income will be underwritten as well.  I know of one carrier who underwrites income at the time of the claim. Depending on the disability insurance company, they may want copies of your tax returns for the last two years at the time of the application. I have one carrier, however, that asks for that information when a claim is filed.

And your job is part of the equation too. Generally, the less safe your job is, the higher your premium. Logic says that a welder would be at a greater risk of getting hurt than a retail worker. With this in mind, some occupations are harder to cover than others. I've had great DI clients over the years who were teachers, boat engine mechanics, firemen, attorneys, realtors and truck drivers. 

I have an agent who was concerned about this for their realtor clients. Because realtors incomes are rarely the same from year to year, how would the company know how much to pay out? When I had an opportunity to speak to an underwriter she eased my fears and said, "We are fully aware that incomes change and will pay out the amount the policy designates. Our concern is making sure that client has a job and that they can't work to do that job." That made me feel better.

Years ago I met a professional golfer who played on a "minor league" tour and was interested in DI. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a single carrier that would make her an offer. Her "professional" status was a quick application killer as the company wouldn't know how much to pay out if she were sick, or more likely, injured. 

The cost of disability insurance is less than you would expect, but by insuring your paycheck, it's worth every cent.

Do I Have To Pay Taxes On Disability Insurance?

If you have been receiving disability benefits from an insurance company you may be wondering if you are responsible for paying taxes on those benefits. The answer really depends on the type of coverage you have and how the insurance premiums are being paid.*

For instance, if you are receiving benefits through a plan that is offered through your employer and the employer is paying the premiums, then those benefits are taxable as income. However, if the premiums are being deducted from your paycheck your benefits are tax-free.

Another time it will be taxed is when it is deducted from someone's paycheck on a pre-tax basis. Yes, pre-taxing the premium will look like you are paying less, but having your benefits taxed when you need them most is not worth the savings. (FYI Life insurance should never be pre-taxed either).

Let's consider what happens if you have an individual disability policy that you have purchased on your own. In a nutshell, the same rules apply. If you are paying for the policy with after-tax dollars then the benefits should be tax-free. However, if you own a business and have the premium payments coming out of the business's checkbook, then those benefits will be taxable. 


The IRS says that Social Security disability benefits may be taxable if one-half of your benefits, plus all of your other income, is greater than a certain amount which is based on your tax filing status. Even if you are not working at all because of a disability, you would still have to count any unearned income such as tax-exempt interest and dividends. If you are married and file a joint return, you also have to include your spouse's income into the calculation, even if your spouse is not receiving any benefits from Social Security.

This all may sound confusing but the concept is a simple one. If you are paying for your disability coverage, whether it comes from your personal bank account or through payroll deduction, you more than likely will not have to pay taxes on the benefits if you should need to file a claim. However, if the premium payment is coming from your employer or you decide to pay it out of your business account, then it will probably be taxable. 

You may not have a choice when it comes to your employer offering to pay for your coverage. I have seen instances when the employer pays for a Long Term Disability (LTD) policy, which does not start paying benefits until 3 or 6 months after the date of the disability, so the employee needs to fill the gap for those first few months without coverage with a Short Term Disability (STD) policy. 

The key here is awareness. If your policy is being paid by your employer, and if you are out of work due to illness or injury, your benefits could be much less than what you would expect. Using easy math for an example, let's assume you make $100 each week. Your disability policy pays 60% of the gross pay, so if you need to file a claim you should be receiving $60, but if it's taxed, that could drop to below $40. Ouch! And finding this out after the fact makes matters even worse if you have tried to set a household budget in place. 

With all of this in mind we still think of Disability Insurance as part of the Holy Trinity of insurance (with life and medical insurance). Are You Protecting Your Lifestyle?

Disability insurance is often misunderstood. While almost everyone gets the need for life insurance, not everyone understands the importance of having disability insurance. Insurance agents have the opportunity to help their clients understand this important coverage. 

Disability insurance protects your earning power should you become disabled and unable to work. It can help protect your lifestyle from a full or partial loss of income. As you well know, the probability of you becoming injured or disabled during your working career is much higher than your probability of dying.

The odds are about three to five times greater that you will become disabled for at least 90 days or longer than the odds are of of you dying. Disability insurance can help bridge this gap in income during a period of disability.

Disability insurance typically comes in two varieties, short-term and long-term.

Short-term disability coverage typically provides income replacement for an injury or disability that lasts anywhere from 30 days to one year. The time frame will vary based on the policy. Short-term disability coverage is a common employee benefit, some employers offer it at no charge. 

Long-term disability policies typically cover a disability that lasts three months or longer. This also includes a permanent disability that limits the covered individual’s ability to work on a permanent basis either in part or totally.

For those who are employed, many employers offer both short-term and long-term disability coverage as part of their employee benefits menu. It’s common for these policies to replace 50% to 60% of the employee’s compensation once the coverage kicks in.

This group coverage generally comes at a reasonable cost and will be sufficient for many of your client’s needs. However, some clients may have situations for which this type of coverage might not suffice. And of course, others who are small business owners, contract employees or otherwise self-employed might not have access to group coverage.

Group disability policies typically have a very broad definition of disability that often refers to the ability to do any sort of work. The policy might require you to work at any sort of job you might be able to do, and then pay you for the difference in your salary from your old job and the new one. In an extreme case this might require someone who is used to white collar employment to work in a fast food restaurant to receive policy benefits.

Disability coverage purchased privately will often have a narrower definition of disability. For example, an oncologist will be considered to be disabled if they can’t work in their field or something extremely close to it. Same with an attorney and many other professions.

Group coverage may not cover some forms of variable income such as commissions or incentives that many salespeople or high level executives might count on as a key portion of their overall compensation. The group policy might limit the covered compensation to the policyholder’s regular compensation.

We recommend that if you have a group plan to avoid having your premium payments deducted "pre-tax", as this can make your benefits taxable if you should become disabled and need to file a claim. Saving a few dollars in payroll tax could decrease your benefits considerably.

Along with that, note that your benefits can be taxable if your employer is paying for your coverage. 

You will need to shop around for a policy and insurance company offering the coverage that best fits your situation. In general, the narrower the definition of disability, the higher the premium. Privately issued policies will as a rule be more expensive than group coverage.

There are a number of factors that will impact the cost and even the availability of a disability policy for you. These include:

  • The elimination period. This is the waiting period until coverage kicks in. The shorter the elimination period, the higher the premium. Think of it as a deductible in time.
  • Definition of disability. As discussed above, a policy with a narrow definition of disability will cost more.
  • Your occupation may factor into the equation, especially if you work in a field that is more likely than some others to result in a disabling injury.
  • Your income. The higher the income the higher the premium as the insurance company would have to pay a higher benefit level for a disability claim.
Social Security offers disability benefits, but they are very hard to qualify for. This is not something you should depend on to cover you in the event of a disabling condition.

Do I Need Business Overhead Expense Insurance?

 

When I speak to groups about their insurance, I often mention "Holy Trinity" of insurance, which is their medical insurance, life insurance and disability insurance. The last one, disability insurance, I tell them, is just is important as the other two, because if one were to get sick or hurt and couldn’t work, the bills don’t stop coming and will need to be paid. Disability is basically paycheck insurance.

But what if you are, like me, self-employed, a 1099 employee or a business owner and don't have access to a group plan? What would happen to your business if you were unable to work?

Which is why I like to bring up Business Overhead Expense  (BOE) coverage. It’s an insurance product most people probably haven’t heard of before even though it's been around for a long time. And it definitely one of the most undersold policies out there, probably because there are agents who don’t even know about it.

Business overhead expense insurance is designed to keep things going when a disability or illness requires you to be temporarily absent. This is different from personal disability insurance, which makes payments directly to you to replace lost income if you can’t work.

If you own a business, it’s important that you understand how BOE works so you can decide if it’s something you need.

BOE is a type of insurance that pays benefits to your business if you’re unable to work. For example, if you’re in a car accident and are seriously injured, or you’re diagnosed with a serious illness, your policy’s benefits could kick in to provide the business with cash flow while you recover.

This type of insurance is typically used to help manage your business’s day-to-day expenses. It helps your business continue as usual even when you can’t be there.

What BOE Insurance Covers

BOE is business-specific, meaning it applies to expenses related directly to running your business. The types of expenses you can use business overhead expense insurance to pay include:

  • Rent or lease payments
  • Loan payments
  • Insurance premiums
  • Utility bills
  • Custodial services
  • Payroll for employees
  • Tax obligations
  • Business credit card bills

There are, however, some things that overhead expense insurance is not designed to cover. For instance, these policies don’t extend to expenses related to improving or expanding your business, such as buying new equipment or opening a second location.

Overhead expense insurance also doesn’t cover your salary. That’s why you would need an individual policy on yourself.

It’s worth considering purchasing this type of insurance if you’re the person who’s primarily in charge of running your business. Having an overhead expense insurance policy in place means the bills continue to get paid for the business when a disability or illness puts you on the sidelines.

Depending on the terms of your policy, your insurance company could pay benefits for up to two years after you file an eligible claim. That can be helpful if you have a serious disability, illness or injury that requires extensive rehabilitation or physical therapy.

Keep in mind that not every business owner may qualify for this type of insurance. If you’re self-employed as a freelancer and run a business from home, for example, you may not be able to purchase a policy. You may have to stick with a regular personal disability insurance policy instead.

There are advantages associated with having this kind of insurance for your business.

Here are some of the key benefits of BOE insurance:

  • Your business can remain open even when you can’t be there to run it
  • Essential business expenses can be paid for using policy benefits, allowing you to preserve your business’s cash reserves
  • Being able to meet payroll means you have a better chance of retaining key employees
  • A BOE policy decreases the odds of having to dip into personal savings to cover business spending
  • Premiums paid for coverage may be tax-deductible
  • Business expenses paid with premiums may also be tax-deductible

In terms of the downsides, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Policies don’t pay benefits to you directly so you’ll still need separate disability coverage for that
  • Benefits typically have a time limit of 2 years and can’t be paid indefinitely
  • Any benefits you receive may be considered taxable income for the business
  • Policies may enforce a maximum monthly benefit limit, which may be less than what you need to continue operations

As you can see, the pros generally outweigh the cons but they still need to be factored in. And you also have to consider the potential return on investment for purchasing this kind of coverage. Having it can be a safety net if you get sick or become disabled but if you never end up using your coverage, you may feel as if you’ve paid premiums for nothing.

The key advantage to having a BOE is that it gives you time to make a decision if you are disabled. You probably won’t know when or if you’ll recover, or if you should shut down the business, sell it or keep it open. That 2 year benefit window gives you time to figure it all out.

What Makes Life Insurance Rates Different?

A few years ago I met a young woman who was married and had two young boys with a third child on the way. She was a server at a local restaurant and I was there at the request of the owner to talk to the staff about various insurance products. The server, who I will call Sue, asked me about life insurance coverage on her husband. She was very concerned because she felt her husband worked a dangerous profession and she did not want to be left with three kids to take care of on her own if something were to happen to him.

I asked Sue some basic questions like her husband's age and general health condition. "He's healthy as a horse, but stubborn as a mule, especially when it comes to life insurance," she said. "He wants to get a policy through his work, but I know we can get it cheaper elsewhere." 

She was right. Sue had done her homework and figured they needed at least $250,000 in life insurance coverage for her husband. At his age, the policy he wanted to get through the "worksite" insurance company was going to cost around $70 each month. When I ran a quote for her the same policy was less than $40 each month. 

I sat down with the two of them a few days later and presented my illustration. She knew it was a good deal and appreciated the savings I was offering. He, on the other hand, argued vehemently against it. At first I couldn't understand what his objection was. Sue was getting visibly upset with him while he acted as if I was taking advantage of him. 

After a painful hour of this I asked him what would make he want to pay close to double for the same policy. He said, "I don't want to have to worry about having that $40 in my bank account each month. I'd rather they just took it out of my paycheck!" Sue, furious at him at this point, looked at her husband incredulously. 

"So this is about convenience?" I asked. 

"Yes," he said meekly. I had heard this argument before, but Sue didn't understand it. Needless to say, I didn't get the application. The tension was palpable as I packed up my papers. Sue apologized for her husband's behavior. 



People are funny sometimes. They are willing to pay extra, and in this case nearly double, for the weirdest things. I had heard the "convenience" argument many times before, so it wasn't new to me. "If they just take it out of my pay I don't have to worry about it," has been the refrain of many people. 

So why was the price of that "convenient" policy so much higher than the one I offered? In a nutshell, it had nothing to do with convenience but everything to do with underwriting. 

You see, I spent a year selling working with the same company that was offering his payroll deducted coverage. The policy Sue's husband was wanting was "simplified issue", which means that the application just had a few health questions. No medical exam, no blood or urine specimen and probably no request for medical records. That puts a lot of risk on the insurance company, and that risk gets passed along to the consumer in the form of higher premiums.

On the other hand, if an insurance company requires a paramed exam, along with requesting medical records from the applicant's physician, that carrier's risk will drop dramatically. And with that decreased risk comes decreased premiums. 

This made sense to me years later when I worked for another insurance company and our manager called a 10-year term policy a "sucker bet". He explained it like this. "A fully underwritten life insurance policy will require an exam and medical records. If nothing shows up from there, the odds of the person dying in the first five years of the policy are extremely low. Basically, the company is collecting premium for 10 years when they are only insuring the last five years of the policy."

Underwriting can find potential risks and problems, thus weeding out those potential early claims. For example, I had a guy apply for a policy who was declined because his liver enzymes were very high. The client was surprised to hear this and I recommended he go to a doctor. Sure enough, he found out he needed a transplant, but it was too late. He passed away a few months later.

As for Sue and her husband, they split up not long after I met with them. She told me he was too hard headed for her and has since remarried. She and her new husband have plenty of life insurance and she has peace of mind.

6 Term Life Insurance Issues To Be Aware Of

For years there has been a debate in the financial services industry over which type of life insurance people need. One side says to "buy term and invest the difference" while the other says that cash value life insurance is a safe way to lock in a rate and let your money grow. I'm not going to argue the pros and cons of either in this post because I think that it really depends on what the client's situation is. In other words, despite the financial gurus who like giving generic advice, I prefer having a discussion with a client to find out what their needs are.

With that in mind, this post will be about term life insurance and things to be aware of when purchasing it. Here are a few things to keep in mind when buying a term life policy.

1. Make sure you're buying enough. That small policy that is offered to you through work probably isn't going to be enough coverage. Take into consideration things like the balance of your mortgage, replacing your income, paying off credit cards and other debt (like car payments). If you have children, include education costs. In other words, make sure that your family can continue to comfortably live in their home, without worrying. 

Also, if you have a 2-income family, make sure to insure both spouses. Those two incomes are typically combined to pay the bills. When determining how much you need to replace income, a simple formula is to take your annual income and multiply it by 10. It may sound high, but it is realistic.

2. Don't wait too long to buy life insurance. By putting off a life insurance purchase, you are actually paying more in the long run. As you age, your premiums increase, so waiting five years to buy a policy will actually cost you more. More importantly, you can leverage your good health by getting coverage when you're younger. Odds are good that you will not be any healthier in the future as you are now and it only takes one health event, such as a heart attack to leave you either uninsurable or with a rate that is out of your price range.

A friend of mine, who is in his early 40's, recently had a mild stroke. Luckily he had coverage in place, but if he didn't, the chances of him getting another policy would be difficult and probably out of his price range.


3. Don't buy too short of a term. Unless you have a specific need in mind, like a 10-year note that needs to be secured, you should be looking at longer term periods. Consider how many years it will take to pay off your mortgage and get the kids out of the house (they may "boomerang" back). A 20 or 30 year term may be what you need. We even offer a term policy that locks in until age 65, which may be the perfect solution for a younger couple. 

4. Be careful with riders. The majority of policies have different riders you can add to your policy, such as a disability rider or accidental death. I personally think that a disability waiver of premium rider is a great value, because it continues to pay your premiums for you if you are deemed "disabled" and can't work. The last thing you need in that situation is your life insurance pulled out from under you.

Depending on the carrier, some riders will be included at no charge, such as accelerated death benefits. We have a term life policy that includes a chronic illness rider with no extra charge. 

5. Review you policy every few years. The fact is that as time passes, your financial situation may change. If you bought a policy 10 years ago, you may now have a totally different status. You may have received a raise, relocated, had twins, or become fabulously wealthy. 

Also, making sure your beneficiaries are up to date is very important. If the individuals you have chosen are deceased or no longer in your good graces, you can replace them at any time. 

6. Find a policy that is convertible to a permanent policy. The convertibility option of a policy is important because your term policy will eventually run out. Having the option to convert your policy to a permanent policy without any health questions makes sense in case you have some change in your health status. 

Term life insurance can be affordable and can be great helping your family if you were to die too soon, but keep in mind that the vast majority of term policies never pay a claim because the term expires before the policy holder. Is There A Covid_19 Insurance Package? (Pt 1)

The Covid_19 has now struck at the highest levels of government and has illustrated that no one is immune to virus. For many of us, the pandemic is something that is a concern, especially as businesses and schools begin to reopen.  Whatever virus "fatigue" that was there has quickly evaporated. 

As I was enjoying a meal with a couple of close friends this weekend, the topic of the pandemic reared its ugly head. One of my buddies asked if there was any particular insurance product that would help people who were concerned about Corona.

Actually, there are several products that come to mind during these times. Each insurance product has a need and can help those who could be worried about the virus ravishing their family's financial situation. To be clear, these products are subject to underwriting and may not be available in all states. Let's look at a few.

First of all, there is life insurance.  After 9/11, the American people had a wake-up call. They realized that they could die at any given minute without warning. For about 6 months after that tragic event, life insurance sales spiked. Sales of life insurance have risen again with fears of the virus working its way through families. 

If the main breadwinner of the family should die unexpectedly, the rest of the family could be in a world of financial pain if there is no life insurance in place. Making sure that your spouse and children can maintain their home, pay off any outstanding debt and insure that your kids can afford a good education can be accomplished with an affordable life insurance policy. 

What happens if, God forbid, you should lose a child due to the virus. It's a terrible thing to consider. Unfortunately I have attended many a fish fry fundraiser to help pay off the cost of a child's funeral. People are hesitant to purchase insurance on child. As one parent told me, "I don't want to profit off of my child's death." No one says you have to profit at all. But there will be expenses and if there is any money left over from the insurance policy, the parents can set up a scholarship fund or contribute to a charity "in memory" of their child.

The second type of insurance I would consider is Disability Income Insurance (DI). A good DI plan should be in place to replace the income of the person who is sick or hurt and not able to work. As we know, the survival rate is high among those who contract the virus, but it can still keep you from working. As stated before, your most valuable asset is not your home or car or investments, but your ability to earn a living. And when someone is out of work due to an injury or illness the bills don't stop coming. 

Many people don't seem to realize that they are one medical emergency away from dire financial straits. Did you know that over 80% of all disability claims are due to illness? And that 62% of all bankruptcies are due to medical costs? Having a DI policy in place can keep a stressful situation, like being seriously ill, from becoming much worse when the bills start to pile up.

Do You And Your Partners Need A Disability Buy-Out Plan?

In a previous post I discussed buy-sell agreements between business partners and why they were necessary. To recap, in the case that a business partner dies, the surviving partner will more than likely want to buy out the deceased partner's interest, and to do that they may need money. With a life insurance policy in place for that purpose, the surviving partner will have the funds needed, thus avoiding a scenario where they are in business with their partner's spouse or other family members.

With that in mind, let's take a look at a similar scenario. For this example, we will name our business partners Bob and Neil. Both are married and have their own families, live in nice middle class neighborhoods and are making enough money to pay their bills while stowing a bit into a retirement account. 

One evening, Bob in on his way home and a car crosses the center line, hitting Bob's vehicle. Fortunately, Bob survives the crash, but unfortunately, he is severely injured. Bob is more than likely going to be permanently disabled and will not be returning to work. 

Luckily for Bob and his family, he had purchased a Disability Insurance (DI) policy early on and will have some income to help pay his personal bills. But what about the business? And what happens to Neil in this situation? Will Neil have to do the work for two people and split the profits with his now disabled partner? 

Here again, a good buy-sell agreement needs to be in place beforehand. This legally binding agreements sets the terms and conditions of the sale and the subsequent purchase of the disabled partner's ownership of the business. Having an insurance policy in place helps fund the buy-out, and can also help pay the disabled partner's bills. 

The payout can be distributed in a lump sum, monthly disbursements or a combination of both. This can be decided at the time of purchase.

In some instances the company pays the premiums for the policy. However some smaller businesses will do a "criss-cross" agreement, in which each partner pays the premiums and receives benefits from the disability policy covering the affected partner. 

After an illness or injury occurs, an elimination period, has to be met before benefits are paid. This elimination period is a waiting period that can be a few months or as long as a couple of years. Think of an elimination period as your deductible, but in time rather than money. And just like your car insurance, the higher the deductible, the cheaper the premiums will be. 

Having a buy-sell agreement avoids a lot of potential issues that can occur if a partner is sick or hurt and unable to work. This plan can prevent a financial loss or even bankruptcy by keeping the business afloat. In turn, this helps keeps those on the staff of the business employed as well. And the owners can be assured control of their business decisions, with the freedom to replace the injured owner with a person of their own choosing. Not to mention that they will not be forced into business with any family members of the disabled partner.

Since the purchase price of the business was stipulated in the original buy-sell agreement, the disabled partner should feel he or she was given a fair market price for their share in the business. I usually suggest that the numbers be updated every few years to keep up with the growth of the business.

How Can Disability Insurance Help Me?

Let's assume you get sick or hurt and are unable to work. You may be in the hospital racking up bills, or worse, in a rehab facility. If you are lucky, you may be recuperating in your home, resting comfortably. Some people can actually function and carry on with most of their day-to-day tasks, they just can't perform the duties of their job. And this is where the real problem is.

As I have mentioned in the past, your number one asset is not your home, business or fancy car. Your biggest and best asset is your ability to earn a living. And if you are not able to work due to a disabling illness or accident, you more than likely are not going to be bringing home a paycheck. 

When I speak to groups about disability insurance I ask them the same question every time: If you are out of work, what happens to your bills? "They keep coming!" I hear from the crowd. 

You see, disability insurance (DI) is insurance for your paycheck. Insuring your income is how you can make sure that you can pay the utility bill, the rent or mortgage, and of course, keep food on the table. As a matter of fact, nearly half (46%) of all foreclosures on conventional mortgages are due to a disability. (Only 2% are due to death)

Won't the government take care of us if we can't work? Sure, the Social Security Disability Insurance program is there for you, but only if you have put in 10 years of work ahead of time. And it pays a whopping $722 each month on average. Plus, the criteria is so strict that only about 35% of those who apply actually qualify. There has to be a better option.

Of course that option is a DI plan. You can purchase one through work or on your own and neither is exorbitantly expensive when compared to the benefits offered. 

Generally speaking, you can insure up to 60-70% of your gross income (close to your "take home pay") and benefits are tax-free with a couple of exceptions. If your employer is paying for your premiums or if you have decided to have the premiums deducted on a pre-tax basis, you could be liable for income tax on your benefits. That's not a great scenario but it is still better than having nothing. 

There are certain factors that go into the underwriting of a DI policy. A few are:

  • Your income. A policy based on your income will need verification of your income, so the insurance company may ask for recent tax returns at the time of application. Or they may request your tax returns when you file a claim. Either way, they do not want to pay you more when you are out of work than what you were making when you were healthy. 
  • Your occupation. Some jobs are more dangerous than others and that will be reflected in the amount you pay for your policy. A roofer has a riskier job than an accountant. And some occupations are difficult to cover at all, like professional athletes. Fortunately, we have carriers who can insure a variety of jobs, and we even have one who will insure a stay-at-home spouse!
  • Your health. A person who is unhealthy will have a harder time finding a policy than the one who is 4% body fat and runs five miles a day. And pre-existing conditions are a factor, but in many instances they may just be excluded from coverage. I had a gentleman client in the Charlotte, NC area years ago with an issue stemming from a previous accident that was excluded. He took the coverage anyway because he it would cover anything else that could happen to him.
How much coverage should you apply for if you are on a budget? I recommend the HUG plan. Coverage for housing, utilities and groceries should be the bare minimum and are essential. As I tell my clients, "Just because you are receiving a check doesn't mean you'll be eating at Outback every night."

Thoughts On Supplemental Insurance

Part of my work is helping people with supplemental insurance benefits. A large percentage of this work is done in a worksite setting, which means that I help people at their place of work and the premiums are deducted from their paychecks. There are several carriers out there offering insurance products like disability, cancer, accident and critical illness plans, along with other insurance products. 

When I speak to other insurance agents who sell these products there is always a debate about which company has the best products. "Our cancer plan pays more than their cancer plan" or something along those lines is usually the way the conversation goes. Some of these agents work exclusively with one carrier so they can get a bit tribal when it comes to who has the superior products.

The truth is that the client really doesn't seem to get to concerned over these details. They basically just want to know if they have a disability plan if they get sick or hurt and can't work, or if the Hospital Indemnity plan will work if they are confined to a hospital. 

But many people do not have access to these plans because they are not part of a group that offers worksite benefits. With that in mind we have looked for some of the best carriers that take those of us who are self-employed or business owners into consideration. If you are a contract employee or just work from home, you can purchase a great cancer plan, disability insurance or other plan. 

I really appreciate hearing people tell me how these supplemental insurance products helped out when the client was in a time of need. One story involved a young boy, around 10 years old, who had cancer and was receiving treatments at a hospital about two hours away from his home. His father was having to take time off from work to travel back and forth and it was severely impacting his paycheck in a negative way. They were literally days away from having the power cut off at their home. 

The father's employer, who for some reason had no clue what was situation was, quickly realized that there was a cancer plan in place that the covered the child as well. They contacted the agent who sent in paperwork on a Thursday afternoon. By Monday, the family received a check for over $15,000. As the boy went on to continue treatments, the family continued to receive benefits from their policy. 

The best part of all this was that the boy's cancer went into remission and he is healthy. And so are the family's finances.   

One of my favorite stories involved a special education teacher at a middle school in North Carolina. She had taken some kids out to the schoolyard for some exercise and one child, who apparently was just a big as her, decided to make a dash for the exit and ran toward the adjoining property off of the campus grounds. This teacher, who I would guess was in her mid to late 50's, tried to get in front of the student, blocking his way. He ran her over like a football player would run into a linebacker, knocking her to the ground and breaking her arm. 

It was all the talk that afternoon among the rest of the staff. I mentioned that she had an accident plan that covered her, even while at work, and that she would likely receive a nice payout from the insurance carrier. The other teachers began asking for an accident plan for themselves. They realized that they could also be hurt at work and began to see the value of such a policy.

6 Questions You Should Ask About Life Insurance Through Work

Quite often I will be discussing life insurance with someone and they will tell me that they don't need any because they have coverage through work. Given that everyone has a different situation, I ask some questions to find out how much they have and if it's enough to cover their needs.

The discussion usually turns to "Do I need to get life insurance through work?" or "Is it any good?" My general answer is that I don't know unless I take a look at it. DISCLOSURE: The information below is not specific to any industry or employer. There are too many plans out there to discuss each one in detail.

Here are some questions to ask your Human Resources person about your life insurance through work.
  1. What's the face amount? It can vary,with the lower end being as small as $1000 to upwards of $20,000. Or the employer may just offer the equivalent of one year's salary.
  2. Is it "basic" or "supplemental"? Most of the time, a "basic" policy is no charge or just very inexpensive. 
  3. How much am I paying for it? If your policy is "supplemental", you may be paying more. One thing to be aware of is when the sales rep quotes you a price based on the frequency of your paycheck. $8 a week sounds good until you do the math and realize you are paying around $35 each month.  
  4. Is my policy "guaranteed issue"? This means that there are no health questions. Most basic policies fall into this category.
  5. Is my policy "simplified issue"? This means that your policy will ask a few health questions. These may be regarded as "knockout questions", which means if you answer "yes" to one, you will be disqualified from getting the coverage. 
  6. Is it portable? What you are trying to find out is if you can take this with you if you leave your employer. And if you can, ask if the rate will go up.
Years ago I was selling "supplemental" life insurance on the coast of South Carolina. Our polices were simplified issue and I felt that they were a bit pricey. That higher price is reflected in the minimal amount of underwriting done, giving the company a higher risk. 

A young couple in Florence, SC asked me about life insurance on the husband. He was an exterminator for a local "bug company" and was being offered supplemental life insurance through his employer. The amount he wanted to purchase was going to cost him $75 each month, where I had a comparable plan for around $40. The difference in his head was that the premiums from my policy were going to be drafted from his bank account each month while the other was going to be deducted from his paycheck. He was willing to pay nearly double for the convenience of not having to worry about the money being in his account. His wife and I argued with him that he was wasting money. About a year later they split up, and she said it was because he was a "hard headed man". 

Most of the time I suggest that if you can get some "basic" coverage through work, go for it. It's cheap and your family can more than likely use it if you die. With that being said, I would treat it as a secondary policy and have a primary policy outside of work. As mentioned earlier, your policy through work may or may not be portable and if you're in poor health when you leave your job, you may not qualify for another plan.

Do I Need Disability Insurance? Pt 2

On my previous post we discussed some general information about disability insurance (DI). I mentioned that if you are sick or hurt and unable to work nothing happens to your bills. They just keep coming. This is how we need to regard DI. Yes, it's to help you if you are disabled, but more importantly, it's an insurance policy for your paycheck.

Consider for a moment your annual income. Now imagine that you have a magical money machine in your home and once a year when you turn it on it prints the same amount of money as your income. The question is this: Would you insure that machine? Of course you would!

That machine is YOU! You are the one making the money and you need to insure your income. As I wrote in the last post, your greatest asset is your ability to earn a living. 

There is another part of this that rarely gets mentioned and that is that no one wants to be a burden on their family. Short term or long term, having to depend on others for your care can make a bad situation worse. Not only can you not work to provide for your family, but you may have amassed some medical bills on top of the bills you already have. 

Then there is the issue of the loss of independence. Not yours, but your family's. Someone may have to take care of you while you are healing, assuming that you will get better. Non-professional caregivers, such as your spouse or adult children will now be charged with preparing your meals, bathing you and taking you to physical therapy. Even though they love you and will feel obligated, eventually a bit of resentment will set in. 


All of the above nightmare scenarios can be avoided with the purchase of a DI policy. For many people the cost is reasonable and is worth the peace of mind that it provides. I have placed polices on school teachers, attorneys, realtors, cosmetologists and many other professions. A few years back we had an unusual case in which the client was a mechanic on a tug boat. After a few days of waiting the underwriter, who apparently spent many hours trying to find a suitable occupation class, finally gave us a verdict. The client gladly accepted the offer. 

We have one insurance carrier who will take on occupations that other companies will refuse. Farmers are especially difficult to insure, but this company will. But my favorite occupation they insure isn't an "occupation" in the sense of the word.

Stay-at-home spouses typically have no income, but if something were to happen to them, there would be a financial burden on the family. The kids may have to start going to daycare or have someone come to the home to "babysit". Either way, that can cost a lot of money. Our carrier will insure a stay-at-home spouse if they get sick or hurt, as long as the working spouse has a policy with the company. 

One of the features of a DI policy is the "elimination period". Think of this as your deductible, but instead of dollars it's measured in time. A typical group short term disability policy may offer a 0/7 elimination period. This means that the policy benefits will begin on the first day after an accident and the eighth day after a sickness. If you want to save money on your premium, you can purchase a policy with a longer elimination period, like 7/7 or 7/14. 

When we talk to folks who are self-employed or business owners about our individual policies, they are usually offered a 30, 60, or 90 day elimination period. Even though it may sound scary to have to "self-insure" for a longer amount of time, most of these people have some money stashed away in savings just for this reason.

Do I Need Disability Insurance? Pt 1

In the world of life and health insurance sales, one product is considered to "undersold" more than others, and that product is disability insurance (DI). Sometimes known as "disability income" coverage, DI is usually sold by agents who work in the worksite or payroll deduction market, such as Aflac, Colonial Life and others who sell benefits in the workplace. These companies typically have a participation minimum, such as 3 or 5 employees having to buy the product, as well as caps as to how much they will pay out.

Then there are agents like myself who work with individual clients, mostly business owners, contract employees or otherwise self-employed people, who don't have access to the previously mentioned companies. Also, many of these people actually have an income that is above average and need higher benefit amounts.

Whether you have access to DI through an employer or not, the question remains: Do you need it? To answer that, we need to ask one more question: Do others depend on your income? Is your income needed to pay the bills, pay off debt, pay for utilities or groceries? Is your family dependent on your income to provide for educational expenses or transportation? 

When I talk to prospective clients I always ask what their number one asset is. They usually say something along the lines of their home, their business or even their car. (One lady told me it was her sparkling personality.) None of those answers was correct. Their number one asset was their ability to earn a living. Without that, they could not pay for the house, or the car or fund their business. 

Our income provides us with the ability to eat, enjoy TV and generally live indoors. I don't know about you, but I enjoy my air conditioning and hot water. 

The premise of DI is clear, but getting a policy can be a little more difficult than life insurance. Both are underwritten on the basis of your age and health, but DI is also underwritten on the basis of the type of work you do and your income. The safer your job, the lower your premium. A real estate agent will generally have a lower rate than a welder. Certain professions are very difficult if not impossible to insure, such as roofers. 

On a sidenote, I once had a client apply for a policy who liked to fly small airplanes. The insurance carrier actually had me complete an additional form for this avocation as I was a bit concerned. After not hearing back for a few days I called the underwriter to get a decision on whether or not the policy would be issued. The nice lady said, "If we were selling life insurance to this guy, I'd be concerned, but with the kind of plane he's flying, I'm not too worried about it." I asked if she thought it was a safe plane and she said, "No, but if he crashes he won't survive to be disabled." 



Sometimes income is verified when the application is taken but I have had occasions when it was verified during a claim. Either way, the insurance carrier will usually ask for a copy of tax returns. This can vary depending on the insurance company.
