Let's Keep Your Private Information Private

Last week, while on a work trip in Virginia, I saw a commercial on TV for life insurance. You more than likely have seen these ads as well. 

"Bob, 45, just got $2 million life insurance policy for $10 a month! Let us help you!" the voice over guy screams. A blur of fine print flashes across the screen. I'm not sure if I read it all correctly, but it implied that Bob got super ultra preferred rates because he runs marathons daily and is 4% body fat. In essence, Bob will never die.

I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the point. The ad shows the best case scenario, but we all know that if we could have read the rest of that blur of words, it would also mention that all rates are subject to underwriting and your premium could differ. 

These ads are for insurance agencies which represent multiple companies. When someone goes online and looks for a quote, the agency gathers your information. But what does it do with that information, like your date of birth and email address? That information is sold to an insurance agent who has purchased that lead. 


Here is where things get weird. Many insurance agents will purchase leads. They think it will be worth the cost to avoid having to prospect for clients or advertise. Personally, I have never had much luck with leads of any kind. 

I used to work with a life agent, who we will call Pete. Pete paid a service approximately $300 for a year's worth of leads. Part of this deal was that Pete could choose up to three zip codes, and if the leads were in those zip codes, the agency would email him the prospects information. The problem was that there could several agents signed up for the same zip code, and they would each get an email.


According to Pete, he needed to wake up early enough to get the email and be the first agent to call the prospect. If he was too late, even by a few minutes, the poor prospect, who didn't understand what was going on, would yell at him. "I was looking at life insurance in the middle of night because I couldn't sleep. I didn't realize I was going to get five agents calling me!"

Pete also told me that most of these leads were from people who were "kicking the tires" to see how much insurance would cost and had no intention of actually buying a policy. And if they did, the premiums would be so low that his commissions would never make up for the $300 he paid for this "service". 

We do things a bit differently. If you go to our website, we also have all of the big name insurance companies, and our site compares rates as well. And, yes, we do gather your information as well. But that is where any similarities end. 

If someone likes a quote on our site, they can start an application. We don't sell data to agents. We will contact prospects to let them know we are available if they have questions or if the insurance carrier has any underwriting questions. Everyone is trying to stay within a budget, even when it comes to making sure that their family can stay in their own home if tragedy should strike. 4 Things To Consider When Choosing A Term Life Policy

Over the years I have noticed that many of my prospective clients don't really know about the different types of insurance, such as term insurance or whole life. As a matter of fact, I just met with a young couple who said they needed whole life because "that's what my mother said to buy". When they saw the price of the whole life policy compared to a term and a universal life they were surprised at the cost. "Maybe Mom didn't know what she was talking about after all," the young man said with a chuckle.

Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with whole life or any other kind of life insurance, as long as it fits your needs and your budget. As I always say, each insurance product is good for something, but not all insurance products are good for everyone. In the case of this couple, the best fit for their needs and their budget was a term life policy.

Term life insurance is exactly as it sounds. It provides coverage and a guaranteed rate for a specific term, say 15 or 20 years. It does not build cash value and you can't borrow against it. Think of it as renting a home compared to buying a home. If you are buying a home you can build equity and borrow against the value. Renters can't do either of those. 

The advantage of term life insurance is that, because it only provides a death benefit, it can be much less expensive and one can purchase a lot of coverage. For example, a 40 year old man who does not use tobacco and is fairly good health can get a $100,000 20-year term policy for under $25/month. That same person applying for a whole life policy for the same face amount would pay at least $100/month. That's a big difference in price. 

So what do you need to look for when shopping for a term policy? Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Term length. How long of a term do you need? Be aware that the longer the term, the more the premium will go up, but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you have a 30 year mortgage maybe a 30 year term is a good fit. Also, you can consider how long it will take to pay off the house and to get the kids out of the house. For younger people, we offer term policies to age 65. 
  2. Riders. Many term policies will offer optional riders you can add on to the policy. Most of my clients like the Waiver of Premium option because if they are disabled and unable to work, the insurance company will pay the premium for them. 
  3. Other features. Some policies have riders that are built into the policy at no additional charge. We have one carrier that includes benefits for chronic illness and and critical illnesses in their term life policies. 
  4. Convertibility. This is important for those people who may want a permanent policy at some point because they can "convert" part or all of the policy without any health questions. There may be limitations on when one can convert their policy so check with your agent.

Have Life Insurance? You May Need More

You probably need life insurance if others are depending on you. If the only coverage you have is through your job, though, you may not have enough.

Fortunately, buying life insurance has gotten easier in some ways during the pandemic. Plus, coverage may be cheaper than you think.

The rising COVID-19 death toll has led more people to at least think about their life insurance needs, and many have taken action. One in  four Americans who have life insurance say they purchased or increased their coverage because of COVID-19, according to a NerdWallet survey conducted Oct. 29 to Nov. 2 by The Harris Poll. Many of those who purchased or increased their coverage were motivated by fear of being diagnosed with the disease (30%) or knowing someone who had (29%).

A survey by insurance industry trade group LIMRA this summer found nearly 6 in 10 Americans (58%) say they have a heightened awareness about the importance of life insurance, and about 3 out of 10 (32%) who were shopping for life insurance said it was in response to COVID-19. The number of term policies, the most popular type of life insurance, rose 10% in the third quarter compared with a year earlier, LIMRA found. That was the largest increase in 18 years.

“Obviously, the pandemic is making people much more sensitive to their mortality,” says Alison Salka, LIMRA research director. “So we see more people aware of the need for life insurance.”

This is very similar to the months after 9/11 when people realized they could die sooner or unexpectedly.  

Still, LIMRA has estimated that 30 million American households don’t have coverage, and another 30 million don’t have enough. The average coverage gap between what people have and what they need is about $200,000, LIMRA says.

People think that if they have life insurance through their job it is more than enough, but they haven't really crunched the numbers to see how much their family will need if they die prematurely.

Employer-provided life insurance policies are typically capped at certain dollar amounts, such as $20,000 or $50,000, or limit coverage to one to two times an employee’s annual pay. That may seem like a lot, but parents with young children may need 10 times their salary or more to replace their incomes until the kids are grown.

Even if your need is more modest — your partner requires your income to pay the mortgage, for example — an employer-provided policy might fall short. Plus, you typically lose your coverage if you lose your job, as many Americans have during the pandemic.

Having your own policy means your beneficiaries will remain protected. And thanks in part to the pandemic, you may be able to get coverage faster and without a medical exam (no needles!).

Increasingly, insurers are automating and accelerating the application process, LIMRA’s Salka says. Instead of sending someone to your home to check vital signs and collect blood and urine specimens, some insurers are waiving exams or are exclusively using exam and lab data provided by the applicant’s physician. This trend was already underway, but social distancing and other pandemic challenges mean more insurers are adopting these practices.

Life insurance is often cheaper than people expect. A 30-year-old woman in excellent health might pay $193 a year for 20-year term policy for $500,000. A 40-year-old man, also in excellent health, might pay $341 for the same coverage.

Term insurance covers people for a specified period of time, which is typically 10, 20 or 30 years. (In a previous post we mentioned there are now terms up to 40 and 45 years) Term policies are significantly less expensive than permanent life insurance, which has additional features such as a cash value that can be borrowed against and that grows over time.

But the higher costs of permanent policies can tempt some buyers to skimp on coverage. If you do need life insurance — and you probably do if someone would be financially impacted by your death  — then your priority should be getting enough.

How much do you need? We usually consider things like:

  • Final expense and other costs associated with death. For instance, if you were in the hospital before passing away.
  • Debt. Items like the balance on your mortgage, credit cards and car loans. 
  • Education costs if you have kids and want to take care of  your education. 
  • Income replacement. Your family will still have day-to-day bills to take care of, like car repairs or needing a new stove.

It's Hard To Be Thankful In 2020

This has been a tough year for everyone. Of course, we have all had the Covid pandemic affect us either directly or indirectly. Not only has it been deadly to hundreds of thousands of people, but it has also devastated our economy. Unemployment has been high due to the vast number of businesses that just can't stay open in this environment. And I can't remember another instance in my lifetime where food lines were prevalent. 

In my own case, the year started off on a horrible note when my father, who had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for the last few years, suddenly took a turn for the worse and passed away. And while he was in the hospital during that time, I also ended up in the hospital for almost a week. That all happened in February, and a few weeks later the Coronavirus got bad enough to begin a series of shutdowns. 

We all know the rest of the story. Businesses shut down, people were laid off, the economy spiraled downward and, of course, thousands of lives have been lost. Needless to say, 2020 has sucked.



So here we are at the end of the year. Thanksgiving is upon us and there really isn't a lot for  people to be grateful for. But for me and mine, we can find some silver linings. 

My business took a hit, like many others, but I'm still standing. My income took a hit, but I still am able to pay my bills. And even though I spent some time in the hospital, I can actually say that I now have my health. My family is doing okay and we all have made adjustments. 

I try to keep things in perspective. And through it all I have learned to be grateful. For my home, my family, my work and even the two cats that live with us. I'm grateful that my daughter is working and going to school at the same time. And I have special gratitude for my clients who continue to do business with me, especially now that I have made the change from a traditional agency to a virtual agency. 

But one of the things I'm most grateful for is this blog, which gives me an outlet to get things off my chest, and more importantly, the great (and very forgiving) people who read my rants. Originally created to help bring some much needed attention to my business, the blog has given me a reason to write more. As I write I formulate thoughts that I can, in turn, use when talking with my clients. 

When I write about a cancer plan, I have to actually take the time to learn about that plan. This also applies to our disability insurance or any of the other products offered at Surf Financial Brokers. Doing the research on products so I can discuss them in this blog works in my favor. And my clients enjoy knowing that I know my products too. 

It's understandable if you have had a bad 2020. But at some level there is always going to be something to be grateful for. It really depends on your perspective and how hard you look. With a vaccine hopefully being available sooner than later, I think things will start to turn around for all of us. And for that I am grateful.

How Do The Self-Employed Get Benefits?

I am very comfortable working in the group benefits market. Helping people who work for large companies, school systems and municipalities has been part of my world for nearly 20 years now, and making sure they have the right benefits is a task I welcome.

At the same time, I focus the majority of my efforts toward those people who don't have a large corporate employer. As a 1099 contract employee, I realize that it is up to me to find my own affordable benefits that will help me and my family in the event I should get sick or hurt, or worse, die. That is why I enjoy helping other business owners, entrepreneurs, sales professionals and the otherwise self-employed get the coverages they need.

There are a few differences in the types of products available. Those large group products have less underwriting, and in some cases no underwriting. "Guaranteed issue" means that the insurance will cover a person with no questions (except tobacco usage). "Simplified issue" is another option, which means there may be just a few health questions. Those "knockout questions" will decide whether or not a policy gets issued. One "yes" can do you in.

But policies that are issued on a guaranteed or simplified issue basis typically take on more risk, and that risk is passed on to the employee of the group in the form of higher premiums. One of the tricks agents us when selling in the group insurance field is to quote the premium based on pay frequency. If you are paid weekly, $10 each week sounds a lot better than $45 each month. 

For the rest of us, having to find coverages that aren't deducted from our checks can be overwhelming and daunting. It doesn't have to be that way though. Use a couple of our tools and watch our product videos to see what is available and how these products work. 

Let's look at a few of these insurance products.

  • Life insurance. We suggest that you take a look at affordable term life insurance while you're working, but maybe also get a small permanent policy for final expenses. For our younger clients we offer a term life insurance policy that will carry them out to age 65! And there is no medical exam* for policies under $250,000. 
  • Individual Disability insurance. This should be called "paycheck insurance", because that is the purpose of this policy. When trying to determine how much coverage you should apply for, I suggest the "H.U.G." method by figuring out much monthly expenditures are for housing, utilities and groceries. (Note: individual disability policies generally don't cover maternity unless the doctor deems it necessary during the pregnancy.)
  • Business Overhead Expense insurance. This is another version of the previously mentioned Disability insurance, but the benefits cover the bills of your business, not your personal bills. If you rent an office, have utility and payroll expenses, this plan gives you the time to think your options over if you get sick or hurt and are not able to work. You may recover, retire or sell the business, but you won't be rushed into a decision.
  • Cancer insurance. I have found that when working with large groups of employees, cancer plans are popular through word of mouth. If one employee is diagnosed the other staff members realize how expensive the out-of-pocket costs are. We have a couple of different options for cancer insurance, one being a traditional reimbursement plan, as well as a lump-sump plan. Both can cover deductibles and co-pays and offer a wellness benefit. (One of our plans also covers several other diseases as well, like meningitis and tuberculosis.)
  • Cancer, heart attack and stroke insurance. These plans give you the option to choose if you want coverage for one, two or three types of illnesses.
  • Accident insurance. Coverage for any type of accident, from cutting your hand and needing a few stitches to serious automobile wrecks. As long as you get some medical attention these plans pay a benefit. Great for active people or if you have kids who play sports.

What Makes Life Insurance Rates Different?

A few years ago I met a young woman who was married and had two young boys with a third child on the way. She was a server at a local restaurant and I was there at the request of the owner to talk to the staff about various insurance products. The server, who I will call Sue, asked me about life insurance coverage on her husband. She was very concerned because she felt her husband worked a dangerous profession and she did not want to be left with three kids to take care of on her own if something were to happen to him.

I asked Sue some basic questions like her husband's age and general health condition. "He's healthy as a horse, but stubborn as a mule, especially when it comes to life insurance," she said. "He wants to get a policy through his work, but I know we can get it cheaper elsewhere." 

She was right. Sue had done her homework and figured they needed at least $250,000 in life insurance coverage for her husband. At his age, the policy he wanted to get through the "worksite" insurance company was going to cost around $70 each month. When I ran a quote for her the same policy was less than $40 each month. 

I sat down with the two of them a few days later and presented my illustration. She knew it was a good deal and appreciated the savings I was offering. He, on the other hand, argued vehemently against it. At first I couldn't understand what his objection was. Sue was getting visibly upset with him while he acted as if I was taking advantage of him. 

After a painful hour of this I asked him what would make he want to pay close to double for the same policy. He said, "I don't want to have to worry about having that $40 in my bank account each month. I'd rather they just took it out of my paycheck!" Sue, furious at him at this point, looked at her husband incredulously. 

"So this is about convenience?" I asked. 

"Yes," he said meekly. I had heard this argument before, but Sue didn't understand it. Needless to say, I didn't get the application. The tension was palpable as I packed up my papers. Sue apologized for her husband's behavior. 



People are funny sometimes. They are willing to pay extra, and in this case nearly double, for the weirdest things. I had heard the "convenience" argument many times before, so it wasn't new to me. "If they just take it out of my pay I don't have to worry about it," has been the refrain of many people. 

So why was the price of that "convenient" policy so much higher than the one I offered? In a nutshell, it had nothing to do with convenience but everything to do with underwriting. 

You see, I spent a year selling working with the same company that was offering his payroll deducted coverage. The policy Sue's husband was wanting was "simplified issue", which means that the application just had a few health questions. No medical exam, no blood or urine specimen and probably no request for medical records. That puts a lot of risk on the insurance company, and that risk gets passed along to the consumer in the form of higher premiums.

On the other hand, if an insurance company requires a paramed exam, along with requesting medical records from the applicant's physician, that carrier's risk will drop dramatically. And with that decreased risk comes decreased premiums. 

This made sense to me years later when I worked for another insurance company and our manager called a 10-year term policy a "sucker bet". He explained it like this. "A fully underwritten life insurance policy will require an exam and medical records. If nothing shows up from there, the odds of the person dying in the first five years of the policy are extremely low. Basically, the company is collecting premium for 10 years when they are only insuring the last five years of the policy."

Underwriting can find potential risks and problems, thus weeding out those potential early claims. For example, I had a guy apply for a policy who was declined because his liver enzymes were very high. The client was surprised to hear this and I recommended he go to a doctor. Sure enough, he found out he needed a transplant, but it was too late. He passed away a few months later.

As for Sue and her husband, they split up not long after I met with them. She told me he was too hard headed for her and has since remarried. She and her new husband have plenty of life insurance and she has peace of mind.

6 Term Life Insurance Issues To Be Aware Of

For years there has been a debate in the financial services industry over which type of life insurance people need. One side says to "buy term and invest the difference" while the other says that cash value life insurance is a safe way to lock in a rate and let your money grow. I'm not going to argue the pros and cons of either in this post because I think that it really depends on what the client's situation is. In other words, despite the financial gurus who like giving generic advice, I prefer having a discussion with a client to find out what their needs are.

With that in mind, this post will be about term life insurance and things to be aware of when purchasing it. Here are a few things to keep in mind when buying a term life policy.

1. Make sure you're buying enough. That small policy that is offered to you through work probably isn't going to be enough coverage. Take into consideration things like the balance of your mortgage, replacing your income, paying off credit cards and other debt (like car payments). If you have children, include education costs. In other words, make sure that your family can continue to comfortably live in their home, without worrying. 

Also, if you have a 2-income family, make sure to insure both spouses. Those two incomes are typically combined to pay the bills. When determining how much you need to replace income, a simple formula is to take your annual income and multiply it by 10. It may sound high, but it is realistic.

2. Don't wait too long to buy life insurance. By putting off a life insurance purchase, you are actually paying more in the long run. As you age, your premiums increase, so waiting five years to buy a policy will actually cost you more. More importantly, you can leverage your good health by getting coverage when you're younger. Odds are good that you will not be any healthier in the future as you are now and it only takes one health event, such as a heart attack to leave you either uninsurable or with a rate that is out of your price range.

A friend of mine, who is in his early 40's, recently had a mild stroke. Luckily he had coverage in place, but if he didn't, the chances of him getting another policy would be difficult and probably out of his price range.


3. Don't buy too short of a term. Unless you have a specific need in mind, like a 10-year note that needs to be secured, you should be looking at longer term periods. Consider how many years it will take to pay off your mortgage and get the kids out of the house (they may "boomerang" back). A 20 or 30 year term may be what you need. We even offer a term policy that locks in until age 65, which may be the perfect solution for a younger couple. 

4. Be careful with riders. The majority of policies have different riders you can add to your policy, such as a disability rider or accidental death. I personally think that a disability waiver of premium rider is a great value, because it continues to pay your premiums for you if you are deemed "disabled" and can't work. The last thing you need in that situation is your life insurance pulled out from under you.

Depending on the carrier, some riders will be included at no charge, such as accelerated death benefits. We have a term life policy that includes a chronic illness rider with no extra charge. 

5. Review you policy every few years. The fact is that as time passes, your financial situation may change. If you bought a policy 10 years ago, you may now have a totally different status. You may have received a raise, relocated, had twins, or become fabulously wealthy. 

Also, making sure your beneficiaries are up to date is very important. If the individuals you have chosen are deceased or no longer in your good graces, you can replace them at any time. 

6. Find a policy that is convertible to a permanent policy. The convertibility option of a policy is important because your term policy will eventually run out. Having the option to convert your policy to a permanent policy without any health questions makes sense in case you have some change in your health status. 

Term life insurance can be affordable and can be great helping your family if you were to die too soon, but keep in mind that the vast majority of term policies never pay a claim because the term expires before the policy holder. How Do I Cover Out-Of-Pocket Medical Expenses?

With Covid in the news so much, we have had a spike in interest regarding the various supplemental plans we offer. Even though medical insurance pays the majority of the hospital and doctors' bills, there are still a lot of expenses that are not covered. Deductibles and coinsurance just two of examples. We recommend you take a look at your medical coverage when enrolling and check to see what your Out of Pocket (OOP) maximum is during the plan year. 

The OOP is the amount you could be on the responsible for if you were to be seriously ill. Earlier this year I was hospitalized for nearly a week when my pancreatitis flared up. Beside the physical pain I was having (it really hurt!) I knew there was going to be some financial pain as well. My OOP was around $4500. 

Many people have chosen medical plans with high deductibles to keep their premiums low, but they haven't considered how they will pay for those deductibles if they are hospitalized. Sure, you can call the hospital or other provider and work out a payment plan, but it would be much easier to have an insurance policy that can pay those out-of-pocket costs.

This is the time of year when many people are making changes into their medical plans. Open enrollment gives us an opportunity to made adjustments that fit into our budgets.

 

There has been a misconception that we have to work for a company to be eligible for group supplemental plans, but that's not always the case. A large number of individuals who are business owners, contract employees, or otherwise self-employed, can still have access to some great policies that will help cover those bills that their major medical does not.

We have options like our Hospital Indemnity (HI) plans, which give you extra money if you are admitted and confined to the hospital. As mentioned earlier, interest in these plans has increased due to the pandemic. And you can tailor the plan to give you the coverage you need. 

These plans pay directly to you, not the doctor or the hospital, so you can use the money as you need. There are no networks involved, so it doesn't matter where your received care. And these plans pay in addition to other insurance and workers' compensation plans. 

When you apply for an HI plan you can choose amounts for being admitted to the hospital, as well as daily confinement benefits. There are also optional riders for serious accidents and outpatient surgery. That flexibility lets you customize your plan to be affordable for you.

Filing a claim is easy as well. After leaving the hospital, simply fill out the forms and attach any medical receipts. 

During these crazy times when the Coronavirus is in the news each day, we see hospitals filled to capacity all over the country. Record numbers of cases remind us that anyone can get seriously ill, and not necessary from Covid, but from other ailments, like heart disease, cancer and strokes. And of course, serious accidents can also be costly. That is why we have health insurance in the first place. Making sure we can cover our health insurance premiums is tough, but trying to cover those extra expenses can be even tougher. And trust us when we say that not everyone wants to contribute to a GoFundMe page.

Is My Agent Looking Out For My Best Interest?

A few years ago a friend (whom I'll call "Bill")  heard I was selling insurance. Bill and I hadn't been in contact for a few years as he had moved out of town, so getting a call from him was a bit unexpected. We chatted briefly and then he gave me his personal situation. Bill was doing well financially with a successful business, was considering getting married and had a few investments here and there. We discussed my practice and what I offered.

Then he asked, "What's the best insurance plan you have?" 

Knowing he was an analytical thinker I replied with, "What are you trying to accomplish?" 

He laughed and said, "That's the answer I was looking for. If  you had blurted out a specific product I'd know that you were probably looking out for you instead of me." He suspected, and perhaps rightly so, that a life insurance agent would push the product that would pay the highest commission. 

When someone calls in and asks for a specific product, say a 20-year term life insurance policy for $150,000, I know that they probably have done some research. I may ask a few questions to make sure it's what they need, but I do my best not to pressure someone. They have a need and a budget and I do my best to keep them happy. 


On the other hand, if you have an agent who aggressively promotes one insurance product constantly, they are not looking at your "big picture" holistically. A good example is the financial "advisor" who only pushes annuities. The commissions on these can be big and agents like to sell them because there are no health questions. Herein lies the problem. Not everyone needs an annuity, but the agent will make it sound like everyone does.

One of my former coworkers at a life insurance agency loved to take applications on clients who were tobacco users. He said it was a "premium enhancer" because their rate would increase, thus making his commissions go up as well. I watched him one day as he was getting basic information from a client. He asked if she smoked and she said that she did. "Good for you!" he said enthusiastically and patted her on the back.

On another occasion, a client answered that she did not use tobacco. He frowned a bit and said, "Too bad, all the cool kids are doing it." He tried to make it a joke, but I got the feeling he was disappointed in the client's good habits.

All of this leads back to that dirty word, "commissions". Unfortunately, people hear that word and think that someone is trying to take advantage of them. And yes, the higher the price of a policy, the more I make, but it's true in other professions too. 

Realtors work off of a percentage of the sale, but that doesn't mean I don't trust them. As I'm currently working with a realtor to sell some property I can say that he has gone above and beyond the call of duty and has put in a lot of hours. Having a rough estimate of what his commission will be doesn't give me pause. I know he's working in my best interest. 

I have learned from experience that when I can satisfy the client with my work I'll get referrals, which leads to more clients. And that is how I make my living, by looking out for the client, not my paycheck.

Should There Be Humor In Insurance?

Selling insurance is a serious business to most people. Let's face it, life insurance, disability insurance and other lines like cancer and accident plans are heavy subjects. Sitting with a client and talking about how their family will handle it when they die isn't the happiest discussion of the day. And asking them how they think their loved one will handle the family's finances if they can't work or become chronically ill is necessary, but not the kind of conversation one considers enjoyable. 

As an agent and insurance broker, I've had people tell me that they just want to avoid these doom and gloom topics. I completely understand that our everyday lives are full of negativity and bad news, especially with a pandemic and economic troubles in the news each day. But some topics, like making sure that your family is taken care of, have to be considered.

With this in mind, I try to keep the conversation serious, but not too serious. Half of the battle is to keep a good demeanor and let the client know that the seriousness of what we are trying to accomplish, which is securing the financial future of a family. 

However, sometimes a little humor injected into a conversation lightens the mood. I'm not advocating wearing a clown outfit when meeting with clients. But I do think that tossing in a little humor doesn't hurt anyone and keeps it all in perspective. Check out the video below to see how a bit of humor is okay.


A good example of this is when I discuss life insurance with a client. Part of the talk usually involves funeral costs. The average funeral runs about $7360, according to the National Funeral Directors Association, and there are usually some other expenses associated with death, like a brief hospital stay. To be safe, I may give a client an illustration for $10k. I sometimes will include a second illustration for $15k and show that as well. 

When the client asks why I show two illustrations I say, "The first quote covers the cost of your funeral. The second one is for the funeral plus an open bar for your mourners." That usually gets a chuckle. I even had one client take the higher coverage.

In my 20+ years in the business, I've worked with people who tried to be either too serious, or thought that they were standup comedians. Personally, I try to get to know my client a bit before trying to inject jokes. And I have even had clients who took a dark subject, like their own death, and made light of it. 

One client of mine began by telling me, in front of his wife and kids, that he had been shopping around for someone to cremate him and was on the hunt for the best rates. "I think I've got a guy down to $750, but I want him to guarantee that rate." His wife looked on in horror as he laughed at his own comment. "She's worried that the crematorium will increase the price when I'm not around to argue," he said with a sly grin. Dark humor at it's best.

Someone once said that people won't always remember everything you say, but they will remember how you made them feel when you said it. I don't expect my clients to remember every facet of the policy they are considering, but I do want them to feel comfortable and know that I'm looking out for their best interest, hopefully with a little humor.

Is There A Covid_19 Insurance Package? (Pt. 2)

In the last post told you about a couple of insurance products, namely life insurance and disability income insurance, that are a great fit if you are concerned about catching the Covid_19 virus. In my opinion they are two insurance coverages that everyone probably needs. As a matter of fact, when I speak to groups about their insurance products I discuss the "Holy Trinity of Insurance", consisting of life and disability insurance, as well as the major medical portion. 

Just because other products are not in the Holy Trinity doesn't mean they can't be good products and act as the "saints"(as you can tell my mother sent me to Sunday school). I have a couple of  options for you if Covid_19 is in the back of your mind.

The first policy I would like you to consider is a Hospital Indemnity (HI)* plan. Generally speaking, HI plans cover you for being admitted and confined to the hospital. There are a few other benefits that we see from time to time, including anesthesia and outpatient surgery, but not all policies have those or they may be additional riders. These policies can vary dramatically from different companies and also state regulations, so check into what is available in your state. 

One of the things I like about most HI plans is the simplicity. Generally speaking, an HI plan will offer a daily confinement benefit that you decide on. For instance, you can choose $100 or $200 a day benefit. Some policies will offer an additional benefit for being admitted to the hospital like $2500 or $5000. These plans offer riders for critical accidents, skilled nursing facility, outpatient surgery, as well as dental and vision. With all of these riders available one can "customize" their policy for their own needs and budget.

One other policy I want to mention may sound out of place in a discussion about Covid_19, I think it deserves a listen. Given that nursing facilities are suffering greatly from the virus, which apparently is very contagious amongst the residents and caregivers in these facilities, the option of staying in your own home is much better. Of course, there is one obstacle in that strategy, and that's price. 

In my hometown, a good skilled nursing facility would have cost my father around $35,000 a year. He was adamant that he wanted to be in his home and hired a home healthcare company. The cost of this was over $75,000 each year. Even though he really couldn't afford it, my father used the equity in his home to pay for the caregivers to stay with him around the clock. 

With all of this in mind, we offer a Short Term Home Healthcare plan, which helps pay for those expenses related to staying in your own home. Unlike a Long Term Care plan, this plan helps you pay for care only in your own home for up to 365 days (not necessarily in a row). Even though the carrier recently changed the minimum age of this coverage to 61, it is still very affordable and you only have to answer a few simple health questions. Is There A Covid_19 Insurance Package? (Pt 1)

The Covid_19 has now struck at the highest levels of government and has illustrated that no one is immune to virus. For many of us, the pandemic is something that is a concern, especially as businesses and schools begin to reopen.  Whatever virus "fatigue" that was there has quickly evaporated. 

As I was enjoying a meal with a couple of close friends this weekend, the topic of the pandemic reared its ugly head. One of my buddies asked if there was any particular insurance product that would help people who were concerned about Corona.

Actually, there are several products that come to mind during these times. Each insurance product has a need and can help those who could be worried about the virus ravishing their family's financial situation. To be clear, these products are subject to underwriting and may not be available in all states. Let's look at a few.

First of all, there is life insurance.  After 9/11, the American people had a wake-up call. They realized that they could die at any given minute without warning. For about 6 months after that tragic event, life insurance sales spiked. Sales of life insurance have risen again with fears of the virus working its way through families. 

If the main breadwinner of the family should die unexpectedly, the rest of the family could be in a world of financial pain if there is no life insurance in place. Making sure that your spouse and children can maintain their home, pay off any outstanding debt and insure that your kids can afford a good education can be accomplished with an affordable life insurance policy. 

What happens if, God forbid, you should lose a child due to the virus. It's a terrible thing to consider. Unfortunately I have attended many a fish fry fundraiser to help pay off the cost of a child's funeral. People are hesitant to purchase insurance on child. As one parent told me, "I don't want to profit off of my child's death." No one says you have to profit at all. But there will be expenses and if there is any money left over from the insurance policy, the parents can set up a scholarship fund or contribute to a charity "in memory" of their child.

The second type of insurance I would consider is Disability Income Insurance (DI). A good DI plan should be in place to replace the income of the person who is sick or hurt and not able to work. As we know, the survival rate is high among those who contract the virus, but it can still keep you from working. As stated before, your most valuable asset is not your home or car or investments, but your ability to earn a living. And when someone is out of work due to an injury or illness the bills don't stop coming. 

Many people don't seem to realize that they are one medical emergency away from dire financial straits. Did you know that over 80% of all disability claims are due to illness? And that 62% of all bankruptcies are due to medical costs? Having a DI policy in place can keep a stressful situation, like being seriously ill, from becoming much worse when the bills start to pile up.

Insurance News This Week

Again, I wanted to share some news items with you from the world of insurance, with a wee bit of comment added. Feel free to tag someone who would find this interesting. 

We just learned this week that life insurance companies are paying out far fewer life insurance claims due to Covid-19 than they initially expected. The reason for this is that the disease is killing a disproportionately large number of people who don't have life insurance. 

Even though anyone can apparently contract the virus, it is mostly striking older Americans and minorities. Older Americans typically carry smaller policies than those who are still in the workplace. As a group, seniors don't have to worry about paying off a mortgage or making sure their kids can pay for college, because the kids are grown and have their own children. 

According to an article posted on the Wall Street journal website, " In a pattern dating back decades, Black Americans typically have bought modest policies aimed at paying burial and related costs, rather than bigger face-value policies, according to life-insurance agents and historians. Detailed data on policy ownership by race is hard to come by. Since the 1960s, U.S. life insurers quit using race as a factor in underwriting and pricing policies, so they quit collecting race information, executives say."

The two demographics have been hit hard by the virus and sometimes something like this acts like a wake-up call. Now is a great time to consider purchasing additional life insurance.

In another piece of news, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners have created an online tool to help people find life insurance and annuity benefits. Thus far in 2020, over $7.4 million have been located. 

“I am pleased to see that Tennesseans are using the Life Insurance Locator Service to find their loved ones’ benefits during this year which has brought unprecedented hardships to Tennesseans,” said TDCI Commissioner Hodgen Mainda. “As part of Life Insurance Awareness Month, I remind Tennesseans to educate themselves about the importance of life insurance today so they might be better prepared to be a beneficiary in the future.”

This is the kind of story we at Surf Financial Brokers enjoy to see. At the essence of our business is a promise made by the carrier. That promise, that if you die they will help your loved ones by giving them money when they need it most, is important to all in the insurance industry. However, when people move or don't update their beneficiaries often, it can be difficult for an life insurance company to pay the claims. 

With that said, apparently many people who are beneficiaries of policies either don't know they are, or have no idea where the policies are located. We ran into this scenario with my own father's passing. His beneficiaries had predeceased him. Obviously he had not updated his beneficiaries in years. And we found one policy by accident when I called to update someone that he had passed away.

As agents selling life insurance, as well as disability, cancer, accident and long term care plans, a paid claim let's the client know that we stand behind our promise. That translates to how valuable our work really is to us.

Stay Healthy and You Can Save Money

This weekend I went to a grocery store that is a part of a large chain based in the southeast. They have a pharmacy that offers flu shots, which I get each year to ward off the winter's ailments. Even though many of my friends have said that it the vaccination doesn't work for them, for me it is a lifesaver. 

In the past I would get sick with a head cold at least three times each winter, with an additional case of the flu thrown in for good measure. However, since I began getting the flu shot about five years ago, I might have one good cold each year. This let's me work more, stay more active and overall feel better. As they say, an ounce of prevention...

One of the nice perks about getting my flu shot at this store is that they give me a gift card for $10 after my injection, which I promptly redeem for a lovely cheesecake. It has become a bit of a joke in our home when I walk in with the delicious dessert in my hand and a band-aid on my arm. "Ah, Chris got his flu shot again!" is the refrain as the family looks for forks and plates.

But the flu shot is a small part of a bigger picture. I'm not the healthiest person in the world, but I do the best I can by trying to eat right, exercise (mostly yard work, which works up a good sweat) and stay off of the carbonated sodas. All of this is done with intention from a lesson learned years ago. 


As an insurance agent, I also understand the value of the product I sell and know the price is better for people who are healthy. Realizing that I needed enough coverage to pay off my mortgage and some debt if I were to die unexpectedly, I applied for a life insurance policy. I also realized that I would need a paramed exam involving blood, urine and testing for height and weight. 

This was about the time that the low-carbohydrate diets were getting popular so I replaced my usual potato chips with pork rinds, thinking I had beaten the system. Boy was I wrong!

After the nurse did her job I found out that instead of my monthly premium going down, it went up by roughly $10 a month. Apparently my cholesterol was very high, and those stupid pork rinds were more than likely the culprit. 

I kept that policy for a year, then I reapplied with another company, this time eating a lot of salads. Why hadn't I thought of that the first time? I dropped some much needed pounds, got my insurance premium back to a reasonable price and I had a newfound respect for salads, which I still enjoy to this day.  

Odds are that you are not going to get much healthier than you are right now. Personally speaking, I have had my share of health problems in the last five years. Hypertension, stomach problems and borderline diabetes suddenly and unexpectedly became issues for me. I'm on medications to keep my numbers under control, but I could just as easily have had a heart attack, stroke or worse. 

What are you waiting for? Protecting your family's future should be a priority for you. Stay as healthy as you possibly can and get that coverage as soon as possible.

Buying Life Insurance During a Pandemic


With the pandemic all around us, people are starting to look seriously at life insurance to protect themselves and their families. As a matter of fact, a survey conducted in May and June 2020 by Life Happens, an industry funded education group, found that 67% of Americans say that the virus has been a wake-up call for them and 30% say that life insurance has been one of the topics for dinner table discussion. 

Luckily, there’s never a bad time to make a financial plan and lock in coverage. Life insurance companies and agencies, like Surf Financial, quickly implemented plans to work around the hurdles of the pandemic. For instance, many of our carriers already had systems in place for agents to use web based application systems, but with some extra enhancements we can now have policies delivered to the clients directly instead of coming to our offices. 

Now is a great time to buy life insurance because some companies have started raising prices.  Before those increases kick in across the board, you may want to lock in on a great rate. It’s also a prime time to make an application that won’t require a medical exam. In the past, buying a no-exam policy usually meant paying more because the insurer had less information on you to assess their “risk” in selling you a policy. But the pandemic has made in-person meetings impractical, as well as unwelcome, so having a nurse do a paramed exam may no longer be necessary.

Even before the pandemic, many insurers had been working on ways to use data (such as electronic health records and prescription databases) as a substitute for medical exams and to digitalize the life insurance buying experience. Many life insurers quickly adapted by offering no-exam policies at prices comparable to policies that required an exam. This is giving life insurance buyers more choices for coverage—without worrying about how to get an in-person exam done. 

Note: You may still run into a medical exam requirement if you’re looking for a large amount of coverage (in the millions) or you’re older or have health issues.

Some life insurance buyers will purchase the maximum coverage they can get without an exam, even if they need more. For whatever reasons, whether for convenience or because they have a fear of needles. 

Whether life insurers will continue to offer no-exam policies after the pandemic remains to be seen. Exams could make a comeback if insurers see higher claims than they expected on policies that didn’t require a medical exams. If that happens, you could either see rate increases or the companies will start requiring exams again. 

Another school of thought is that carriers won't go back to the old ways. Part of this is because of innovations that were already starting before Covid. 

The unexpected closing of one of the three primary providers of life insurance medical exams also caused disruption. In early July, EMSI suddenly shut down and insurers had to scramble to get their applicants rescheduled with other exam providers. (The other two large providers are ExamOne and APPS-Portamedic.)

A typical life insurance application includes dozens of questions about your health, prescriptions, family health history, driving record and dangerous activities such as sky-diving. Since the application process is all about the insurer “assessing risk,” questions concerning the virus have quickly became a standard part of applications.

If you answer "yes" to questions like "Have you been diagnosed with Covid?" or "Has someone in your household been diagnosed with Covid-19?" you may not have your policy issued or it may be postponed.  And if you have had the virus and have recovered, you may still have some difficulty getting a policy, mainly because not enough is known yet about the virus. 

Insurance companies have always been concerned when it came to international travel. When the pandemic started, traveling internationally was seen as especially risky from a life insurance buying perspective. Most life insurance companies instituted postponements for applications until after the travel. Once you were back and healthy, and after a certain period of time such as 30 days, the insurer would consider your application. If you have plans for international travel this year, expect a delay on a new life insurance policy for at least 30 days. And that’s assuming you don’t have additional international travel plans.

If you’re ready to buy coverage, life insurance companies are fully open for business, but be prepared for potential delays due to the pandemic: You may experience a delay in the application process if your insurer wants to request medical records, as many doctors’ offices have reduced staff for doing such tasks. If your application will require a medical exam, you might also experience a delay, especially if you’re avoiding in-person contact with strangers.

Non Medical Life Insurance

For many people, finding a no exam life insurance policy can be a great way to purchase a policy conveniently and quickly. But convenience is just one reason why people like life insurance with no medical exams. In today's world of Covid-19, as we try to do social distancing, many just don't want a nurse, no matter how sterile, to come into their homes. And I'm sure there are some nurses who are concerned about their safety as well.

I had a client from Florence, SC who was terrified of needles. It stressed her out to no end, but she needed some life insurance protection and reluctantly agreed to the paramed exam. The nurse told me later that the client nearly passed out and her blood pressure was very high, all as a result of her fear of needles. Again, convenience is not the only reason to purchase no exam life insurance.

These policies allow you to get term life coverage to financially protect your family in the event of your early death, without having to undergo a medical test. 

Whether you are looking at term life insurance or whole life insurance, it usually means passing medical underwriting — and that involves a medical exam in which a nurse meets you at your home or work. This exam can include the nurses getting your information, such as medications, but also having to measure your blood pressure, height and weight, and procure blood and urine samples.

Unfortunately, having to pass a medical test can be a roadblock for some people to getting this important coverage. Maybe they feel they can’t pass medical underwriting. Or, maybe, like the client I mentioned earlier, they just don’t like to be poked and prodded with needles. Either way, they put off buying the coverage they need to protect their family's financial needs.



Before we get started, let’s make sure you understand some basics about no exam life insurance. There are two types of these policies - simplified issue and guaranteed issue. 

When it comes to simplified issue no exam life insurance, you simply answer a series of questions about yourself and your general state of health to qualify. If your responses fall in the parameters of the insurance carriers underwriting limits, you are halfway there.  That’s different than the normal underwriting process where you have to undergo a medical exam. Be aware that the life insurance company can still request your medical records. Depending on the face amount, your age and whether or not you smoke, the carrier may forego asking for those records as well. However, there is a trade-off for these so-called “simplified issue policies.” They will usually be a little bit more expensive than their medically underwritten counterparts. 

For instance, I had a 30 year old woman, non-smoker and in overall good health, in Myrtle Beach, SC apply for $250,000 20-year term policy which required no medical exam. A comparable policy requiring the exam came in about $9/month cheaper. As you can see, the risk to the carrier was built into the premiums.

Guaranteed issue policies tend to come in the form of whole life policies and are usually taken by those who have health issues which would normally keep them from getting coverage. There is no medical exam, no health questions and the price can be higher. Typically these are bought for final expenses associated with funerals and some may have limited benefits for the first two years of the policy.

I advise my clients to be truthful in answering the survey questions. If the carrier finds that you may have "fudged" your information they can void your policy.
